An investigation is underway into links to drugs, mucinions and weapons at Amay's 4th Engineer Battalion, near Huy.
It is suspected of arms trafficking with members of the Albanian and Chechen mafia. The media have "conquered" with bombastic headlines this affair of smuggling in the Belgian army with the foreign mafia, reports the Swiss Albanian newspaper Le canton27.ch.
The Minister of Defense, Ludivine Dedonder, and the head of the army, Admiral Michel Hofmann, announced on Thursday that a certain number of soldiers from this engineering battalion had been preventively suspended from their functions due to "serious facts" of a "structural" nature. ".
A platoon of this battalion (a sub-unit of about thirty men) was disbanded, a "serious" and "perhaps unique" decision in recent Defense history. But according to Het Laatste Nieuws newspaper and private Flemish TV channel VTM, some members of the battalion are also under investigation for arms trafficking and drug-related crimes.
"This would include arms trafficking with members of the Albanian and Chechen mafia", writes the Swiss newspaper 'Le canton27.ch', referring to the Belgian media.
