
Italian police have arrested an Albanian man with the initials HY, one of the most wanted, as part of a criminal group. This person is known to the police, as he has a previous criminal record.
Wanted by Belgium for trafficking 1.5 tons of cocaine on the Antwerp, Rotterdam, Le Havre and Florence route. The Albanian had first contact with criminal groups in Colombia. We recall that 6 Albanians and Italians were previously arrested, while 7 others were placed under investigation.
After the arrest, investigators have also revealed details, considering the Albanian as an important leader of the organization and a powerful connection to Colombian cocaine cartels who will be extradited to Belgium.
The police action was carried out by the Carabinieri of Borgo San Lorenzo on January 28.
"The person is accused of criminal activity for the purposes of international drug trafficking and money laundering, as part of an investigation conducted by Italian and Belgian authorities with the coordination of Eurojust, the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation," Italian media report.
From Latin America to Europe: Drug trafficking in northern ports
The operation was also joined by the Florence Anti-Mafia District Directorate, which led to the capture of a leader of the organization, who was importing large quantities of cocaine directly from Colombia.
The drugs were landed at major ports in Northern Europe, including Antwerp (Belgium), Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Le Havre (France), for subsequent distribution to Italy and other European countries and retail sale.
Investigations, conducted in both Italy and Belgium, revealed the organization's direct contacts with Colombian cartels and the transit of around 1,500 kg of cocaine through European ports. The Albanian is labeled as its leader, but investigations are still underway to fully unravel the organization's function and criminal activity.
During the operation, with the support of European police forces, the following were seized:
-667 kg of cocaine in the port of Le Havre (France)
-85 kg of cocaine in Belgium.
Arrests and roles in the organization
The initial investigations led to the arrest of 6 people of Italian and Albanian nationality, caught red-handed, as well as the identification of seven other people involved in various tasks in drug trafficking.
HY, an Albanian, is said to have played a leading role in the criminal system. According to investigators, he was the head of the group that managed the transport of drugs and money between Belgium and Italy. An international European arrest warrant was also issued against him, while he will remain in custody pending extradition to Belgium, where he will be tried for the crimes committed.
