Ruben Saraiva-Ardian Nikulaj

Ruben Saraiva has admitted to some extent, before prosecutors, that he knew Edmond Haxhi.

Ruben Saraiva, extradited at the end of 2023 from Morocco, accused of the murder in Shëngjin of businessman Ardian Nikulaj on April 19, 2023, has maintained a denial of the accusations.

In the minutes of his interrogation by Lezha prosecutors at the end of last year, this is the only moment in more than a year since his extradition when he was confronted by the prosecution.

In his testimony, Ruben Saraiva said he was born in Portugal and was a resident of London as a football coach. He admitted that he had only one conviction in England, the 2013 one for drug distribution, while he refused to reveal his hometown in Portugal or his mother's name.

Faced with film and scientific evidence, Ruben Saraiva has stated: "I understand the accusations. I understand them clearly and I do not accept them."

After Ruben Saraiva denied knowing the British Harry James Simpson, prosecutors asked him how he explained the fact that traces (biological evidence of saliva belonging to him and Harry Simpson, who the prosecution says played the role of the victim's observer) were found in the trunk of the vehicle with license plate AA837ZM used by Edmond Haxhia.

"I don't have an answer to the question," said Ruben Saraiva.

Prosecutors have placed before Ruben Saraiva a photo taken from a security camera dated 19.04.2023, which captures the moment of his departure from Albania.

Do you know the driver of the vehicle, the prosecutors asked? Again Ruben Saraiva evaded the answer, saying: "I can't see this photo well. I can't tell who is driving the vehicle ."

Prosecutors have insisted on getting an answer as to whether the person in the photo resembles Edmond Haxhi, whom prosecutors have concluded was the mastermind behind this murder.

"I don't see it, so I can't clarify it," Saraiva replied.

Furthermore, the Portuguese man, who was hired in England to kill Ardian Niklulaj, kept his mouth shut when prosecutors showed him other scientific evidence, the discovery of a chewing gum in the garage of Edmond Haxhi's house, from which his DNA was obtained.

However, Ruben Saraiva admitted to some extent, before prosecutors, that he knew Edmond Haxhi when asked about the video footage showing him getting fuel in the vehicle AA837ZM.

"I could have been traveling with Edmond," replied the accused of murder in collaboration, Ruben Saraiva.

In the coming weeks, the trial is expected to begin in the Lezha court with Ruben Saiva alone awaiting the extradition from Great Britain of Edmond Haxhië and the four Britons who were in the role of observers in this murder.

Haxhia and the others have applied to the English Royal Court of Justice for permission to appeal the August 2024 decision allowing their extradition to Albania./TCH
