New details have emerged about the tragic event that occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the Rana e Hedhun area, in Shëngjin, where two young men from Kosovo lost their lives after drowning at sea.
The victims have been identified as Leonit Aliu, 22, and Jetmir Binaku, 23. While three other young men, Dion Myftari, Arbër Beqaj and Drilon Rrustemi , managed to be rescued and are at Lezha Hospital, where they are receiving medical assistance.
According to sources, the five young people were part of the organizational staff of the "Unum" International Electronic Music Festival, which kicks off this Thursday in Shëngjin.
In circumstances that are still being investigated, they entered the sea despite the strong waves caused by the wind, facing a serious risk of drowning. At around 16:30, the police were notified of the emergency situation and the Border Police services, the Lezha Local Police Directorate and emergency teams arrived at the scene.
Thanks to the intervention of several citizens on jet skis, in cooperation with the police, it was possible to retrieve five young people from the sea. They were urgently transported to the hospital, but two of them could not survive.
Police sources say the investigation is focused not only on the circumstances of the incident, but also on the security measures in the area where the festival was being held. The focus is on whether the organizers and those responsible for the staff had taken the necessary measures for the safety of employees and whether instructions were given about the dangerous sea conditions.
The beach area, which was rented for the festival, allegedly lacked watchtowers and other safety measures required by law.
Under the direction of the Prosecutor's Office, the investigative group is continuing its actions to fully clarify the incident and determine responsibilities.
The bodies of Leon Ali and Jetmir Binaku have been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Tirana for an examination, which is expected to determine the causes of death. After the completion of the procedures, the bodies will be handed over to the families for funeral ceremonies.
