Rrogozhina goes to early elections...
The Mayor of Rrogozhina, Edison Memolla, surrendered this afternoon to the Rrogozhina Police, following the Appeals decision of the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO).
According to official sources, Memolla has voluntarily submitted himself to implement the Appeals Court's decision, which upheld the sentence given by the first instance: 1 year in prison, as well as 5 years of deprivation of the right to exercise public functions.
The Mayor of Rrogozhina has been found guilty of the criminal offense of "election corruption", a charge for which he had been investigated and tried by the justice system.
The Appeal Decision of the GJKKO is final at this stage and brings about the immediate execution of the sentence.
The investigation against him began after the administration of an audio recording, where, according to the Special Prosecution Office, he is heard, at the time when he was a candidate for mayor, exerting influence over an OSHEE employee, Blerim Xhamani. The action had to do with the non-disconnection of electricity to a subscriber with unpaid obligations.
The prosecution argued during the trial that the intervention aimed to secure the citizen's electoral support in the local by-elections of March 6, 2022.
Following this decision, the Municipality of Rrogozhina is now expected to hold early elections, as Memolla is caught by the decriminalization law.
