Laert Haxhiu, who was extradited a few days ago from Greece, is expected to appear before the Special Court today, to familiarize himself with the security measure.
On April 24 of this year, the Special Court sentenced Laert Haxhiu to life imprisonment. He was declared guilty for the incident that happened in Lushnje in October 2017, where Jurgen Hoxha and Zamir Latifi were killed and two other people were injured.
In the court's decision, it is stated that the target of this assassination attempt was Xulio Shkurt, Aldo Bare's nephew, but he escaped the bullets. For this assassination, according to SPAK, old events took place in the city of Lushnje, between the Haxhiu and Bare families. Earlier, for the same incident, Anterio Kaloshi and Orges Bilbili, the two associates of Haxhi, were also sentenced to life imprisonment.
The latter was arrested about a year ago in Greece, and despite trying several times to escape extradition, the Greek authorities decided to bring him to Albania.
Haxhiu is a well-known name in Albanian justice, as he was sentenced to 19 years in prison by the court of Lushnje for another assassination attempt in which several people were injured and Xjulio Shkurti was again the target of the attack. Likewise, Laert Haxhiu's name emerged from the testimony of Artan Tafani, who showed that Haxhiu's group organized at least four murders and several serious criminal events that took place in Tirana, Durrës, Elbasan and Korçë.
Who is Laert Haxhiu?
Considered as one of the most dangerous people in the country and at the same time one of the most wanted in recent years, Laert Haxhiu will now face Albanian justice. He was detained in Greece in May last year, after being wanted for an attempted murder in 2016 in the city of Lushnja, for which he was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
It is about the wounding of Xjulio Shkurti, the nephew of Aldo Bare, also known as the leader of the Lushnja gang. According to the investigations, the conflict between Laert Haxhi and Xjulio Shkurt was based on revenge between rival groups operating in the city of Lushnja. While on October 12, 2017, Haxhiu was involved in what is known as the Lushnja massacre, where Zamir Latifi, Jurgen Hoxha were killed and 2 others were injured. Even in this event, according to the Prosecution, the objective was to kill Xjulio Shkurt, Laert Haxhi's rival.
For this event, the Special Court of First Instance and Appeal sentenced his accomplices, Orges Bilbilin and Anterio Kaloshin, to life imprisonment. While in April, the special court also sentenced Laet Hxhiu to life imprisonment in absentia as the main person in connection with the assassination in which 2 were killed and 2 were injured.
At the time Haxhiu was arrested in Greece, several people were arrested in our country, including Artan Tafani, who showed that he had cooperated with the 32-year-old to commit at least 6 murders and several assassinations. The investigations were started by the Prosecutor's Office of Elbasan and then transferred to the special prosecutor's office.
The latter also discovered other suspected members of the group, as well as documented 17 serious criminal events that were committed between 2018-2021. Likewise, the Fier prosecution has doubts that Laert Haxhiu is also involved in the murder of Besnik Hida, an event that took place in September 2019 in the city of Lushnja.
