Donald Greku's suicide, Helsinki Committee reacts: The security block

The Albanian Helsinki Committee has reacted to the suicide in the cell in the Security Block of 46-year-old Donald Greku, an event that occurred on March 13.

According to the AHC, the arrested person had claimed at the moment of arrest that he was a user of hard narcotics such as heroin and cocaine, but in the absence of the institution's doctor, the Security Block staff sent him to the emergency room of the QSUT.

After the visit, the toxicologist issued a prescription stating that the 46-year-old was in a state of drug addiction and referred him to be followed by the Security Block doctor, but the prescription did not specify the medication he should take.

The Albanian Helsinki Committee, in its report, emphasizes that Donald Greku, after returning to the Security Block, was visited by the doctor of this institution.

"After returning to the Security Block, citizen DG was visited by the doctor of this institution. The medical visit book noted "narcotic, unregistered at the Aksion Plus Center", but it was not noted whether or not he should be given medication. On the same day, at 15:30 in the afternoon, the institution's doctor gave the detained citizen the sedative Xanax. After taking the medication at 19:10, date 11.03.2025, he complained of some concerns that he was not in a good condition, that he was in pain and asked to be given Methadone. After this complaint, the doctor recommended to the security employee that he be given Xanax again. Asked by the observers why he had not given Methadone, the Security Room doctor explained that the report of the toxicologist specialist does not indicate the preparation that should have been used," the reaction states.
