The Court of Appeal has upheld the decision for Elsi Levendi, accused of murdering former VIP manager Jurgen Kurti. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison, but he benefits from a shortened trial and will serve 10 years and 8 months in prison.
He is charged with "premeditated murder" carried out in cooperation. The serious incident happened on March 18, 2019 at around 22:15 on "Zef Jubani" street, in Tirana.
" In the Court of the Judicial District of Tirana, the trial was held regarding the criminal case that belongs to the defendant with the initials EL, accused of committing the criminal offense "Murder with premeditation" carried out in cooperation, provided by articles 78/1 and 25 of Criminal Code. The fact object of accusation is related to the event that happened on 18.03.2019, where on "Zef Jubani" street, Tirana, around 22:15, a citizen with the initials JK was killed with a firearm, the citizen with the initials EL is accused of this event . of the Tirana Judicial District with decision no. 523, dated 01.03.2021 decided:
The guilty plea of the defendant EL, for committing the criminal offense of "Premeditated murder" committed in cooperation to the detriment of the citizen JK, provided by article 78/1 and 25 of the Criminal Code and his sentence of 16 (sixteen) years of imprisonment . Pursuant to Article 406 of the Penal Code, 1/3 of the sentence is reduced and ultimately the defendant EL will serve 10 (ten) years and 8 (eight) months of imprisonment.
The appeal case was reviewed on the basis of appeals: - From the Prosecutor's Office at the Court of First Instance in Tirana, which requested a change in the sentence to 25 years of imprisonment. - From the defendant with the initials EL, who requested the annulment of the decision and the dismissal of the criminal case against him, since the criminal case for the criminal offense of "Premeditated murder" committed in collaboration should not have started.
At the end of the appeal trial, today on 02.06.2023, the Court of Appeal of the General Jurisdiction, composed of the panel with the Judicial Reporter Mrs. Elona Toro and member Mrs. Edlira Petri and Mrs. Lutfije Celami, decided: - The enforcement of decision no. 523 dated 01.03.2021 of the Court of the Judicial District of Tirana ", the announcement states.
We recall that Jurgen Kurti lost his life on March 18, 2019 in an assassination attempt in the Wilson Square area of the capital, just a few meters from his home. He was shot dead several times with a pistol by two masked men. Kurt had just gotten out of his car and was crossing the sidewalk to go up to the apartment when he was shot dead on the spot.
But Jurgen Kurti was a well-known character for Albanian justice, since a few years ago, in 2016, he was involved in the murder of his father, but also accused of raping a merchant in Durrës who died after being beaten. However, Kurt was able to win his freedom in both cases. In the first case, the authorship of the murder of his father, Artur Kurti, was taken by his uncle Leonard Ristani, while in the second case, in the murder of Agim Arap in Durrës, the brother-in-law was convicted, despite the fact that all three were arrested.
After the event of April 11, 2017, Jurgen Kurti was escorted by the police and then released. The other two accused, Kostandini Ekonomi was declared innocent, his brother Kujtimi was sentenced to 5 years in prison for manslaughter. In 2018, footage of the murder emerged, while Arap's wife strongly demanded the imprisonment of Jurgen Kurti, whom she said "is responsible for two murders, my husband and his father". In these images, it appeared that there were three people at the scene; Jurgen Kurti and Kujtim and Konstandin Ekonomi. Jurgen Kurti was also known as the manager of VIPs, as he brought some well-known singers to concerts in Albania.
