Murder of Alikaj brothers, family: Killed for revenge, perpetrators threatened

It should have been the end of a normal workday for Gëzim Alikaj, a 52-year-old from Elbasan who worked as a bus driver.

After long hours of daily activity, in the evening he heads to the offices of a transport company, where he would get an authorization for the next day's trip to Croatia. As soon as he parks the car, he finds himself under gun attack.

A precise shot to the head from close range left him with no chance of escape. Alikaj died on the spot. He was found dead around 20:30-21:00 by the person they had arranged to meet. It is not known how long he had been there, but the witness determined the driver's death and immediately notified the police.

"Florenc Alikaj's brother, Gëzim, the second deceased, was going to get authorization for an excursion, because he worked as a bus driver and was going to Croatia, to get an authorization from the president of a company. When he got off, Riza Hasa, the president of the company, saw Gëzim, they had killed him inside the car," said Vladimir Merxhani, the brother-in-law of the Alikaj brothers.

The victim Alikaj had no connection to illegal activities. He lived a normal life and worked as a driver to make ends meet. The family links the incident to the murder of Alfons Çaka in Barcelona, an incident for which the victim's brother was convicted. This would also be the main lead of the investigative bodies...

"The Elbasan prosecution did not call me for this murder of Gëzim. The prosecution only took Gëzim's father, he was 79 years old, he could not hear well from his ears and they held him for almost 6 hours. They interrogated him and took him out, took him home. This was done only for revenge against Florenc Alika", said Vladimir Merxhani, the brother-in-law of the Alikaj brothers.

"Indications constitute reasons to reopen cases and the prosecution must always extend investigations for the full truth, including issues that are considered related," said Ermal Yzeiri, a lawyer.

To this day, the incident remains unsolved, despite the strong information that relatives have provided to the Elbasan Police over the years. The victim's family even speak of open pressure on Gëzim immediately after the mafia crime.

"They also came to my house, at the train station, in the Hekurudha neighborhood, and asked where Ladi Lyti's house was, these three people and a fourth person who was unknown, the same night they killed Gëzim," said Vladimir Merxhani, the brother-in-law of the Alikaj brothers.

They hold the same people responsible for these pressures. Merxhani even talks about indirect messages that have been sent to his family by people known to the family in enmity.

"I was in Bradashesh one day and a friend of mine, who died today, with the surname Skura, told me: "Lad", he said, "these people had family ties with Everest Çaka and Arjan Spahiu because they are aunt's sons". "Lad, open your eyes", he said, "because the sons will kill you". I told him: "There's no need, because I raised them with education"...", said Vladimir Merxhani, the brother-in-law of the Alikaj brothers.

"The state has the obligation, when there are suspicions that there may be events that could lead to revenge, to control the territory in points where the conflict is raging. The lack of the possibility of interrupting the conflict means that the state's measures have not been at the right level to prevent these events," said Florian Bonjaku, former prosecutor.

After Gëzim's murder, almost all of the other relatives left Elbasan for fear of hostility. The only one left is the family's son-in-law, Vladimir, who has been pursuing efforts at the doors of justice for years to shed light on the events.

"The other sisters left immediately, Gëzim's funeral took place and they left. I sent my father-in-law, he was disabled, a man who, how should I say, the neighborhood had respect for him, I took him 4 times and they followed him. When he left on the last day, he only said one thing to me: "Lad, I have you in Gëzim's place, only the authors have to come on stage". I said to him: "Hamza, I am suffering a lot with your daughter, they will come on stage and this talk is over, this man's trust...", said Vladimir Merxhani, the brother-in-law of the Alikaj brothers./ TCH
