New details have emerged regarding the murder of a 42-year-old man in Berat.
Berat police announced that the perpetrator, 63-year-old Kristo Mema (alias Kontandin Hoxha), after seeing the victim Keli Hoxha touching the horse with his hand, told him not to touch it anymore because, according to him, the horse was not well and was agitated.
"Don't touch the horse, it's angry today," the perpetrator is quoted as saying.
The perpetrator testified to the police that after he said this, the victim cursed at him from the family and insulted him. He then stated that, after these curses, in a fit of rage, he took out the knife he had hidden in his horse's saddle and stabbed her.
Afterwards, he claims to have gone to the apartment, tied the horse to the shed, grabbed some food, and hid in one of the castle's caves to escape the police.
For their part, the victim's family members have told the police that the fight started only because the victim had touched the horse with his hand. They have stated that their family member did not curse or insult him, but the horse's owner suddenly stabbed him after telling him "don't touch the horse" and the victim had replied "there's nothing wrong".
The serious incident occurred at around 3:30 pm yesterday afternoon in the "Kala" neighborhood in Berat. The victim, Keli Hoxha, 42 years old, a resident of Tirana and born in Tropoja, could not survive the injuries he sustained and died upon arrival at the Berat Regional Hospital.
The perpetrator was caught a few hours later, hiding in the "dummy cave", near the Church of St. Michael. The perpetrator, Kristo Mema (alias Kontandin Hoxha), committed a murder in 1993 in Berat, but after the incident he fled to Greece for about 25 years, where he also changed his name. He did not serve a single day in prison for this murder, as the murder was time-barred.
