The city of Manastir in North Macedonia, on the occasion of the 115th anniversary of the "cementing" of the Albanian language alphabet, acquired a library with books in the Albanian language, named "Linkest".
The library was brought to life with the initiative of a student and many other donors, who contributed financially but also by bringing Albanian books to enrich the library.
The initiative was born last year. The purpose of this initiative by the student, Emira Selimi, was to save the Albanian language from assimilation in Bitola.
"I am the initiator of the opening of the first Albanian library in the city of Manastir. This idea was born from the moment when I, in 2021, started to do a research in the city of the alphabet regarding the traces of the Orthodox Albanians there. The moment when I started to trace there, I also understood the fate of today's Albanians who remained in the city of Manastir. Statistics showed that in Manastir there were only 5% Albanians, and these 5% were only those with pronounced surnames, while the majority were with surnames Slavized and Turkified and these Albanians with these surnames in the statistics, despite declaring themselves Albanian, they are not written in such statistics. It means that in Manastir you can be anything but an Albanian, no. Then I realized that the Albanians there were losing the Albanian language, the Albanians in Manastir they speak Albanian with many obstacles and this is due to the lack of Albanian high school but also of Albanian literature, and a library enriched with Albanian books will protect the Albanians there from assimilation and protection of the Albanian language," said she.
