Gianni Vattimo

Italian philosopher Gianni Vattimo has passed away at the age of 87.

The news was announced in a post on Facebook by Simone Caminada, assistant and companion of the philosopher for 14 years. Vattimo was known for developing the concept of "weak thinking" as a critique of traditional metaphysics.

He was also a European parliamentarian.

Local media write that Vattimo was born in the Piedmontese capital on January 4, 1936. He can be considered the greatest scholar of Martin Heidegger's thought, having had teachers such as Hans Georg Gadamer. Anti-dogmatic, a firm believer in the fact that the authentic order of things cannot be described philosophically or scientifically, he criticized any metaphysical position.

With Pier Aldo Rovatti he edited a collection of essays on lean thinking in 1983, of which he is considered the greatest exponent. He has always tried to make his theories accessible to the less cultured public, with very simple and clear writing. He declared himself a communist but "not in the old Marxist sense" and was very religious. He defined himself as "homosexual and Christian" and was considered a forerunner of LGBT issues.
