Ornella Vanoni, Italian music icon, passes away

Renowned Italian singer Ornella Vanoni has passed away at the age of 91.

The news was confirmed by Corriere della Sera, which said the artist passed away at her home in Milan, where she had been ill for some time. Her death marks the end of an era for Italian music and culture, which Vanoni had accompanied for more than seven decades with her unmistakable voice and her free and refined style.

The Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, expressed his condolences, stating that Italy lost an incomparable artist, a figure who, with her voice and interpretation, has left an indelible mark on the history of song, theater and entertainment. Strong emotional messages have also come from the world of television and art. Fabio Fazio expressed his shock, saying that he is speechless and unprepared for the loss. Simona Ventura described Vanoni as "the greatest", emphasizing that her music will remain forever in the hearts of the public. Director Emma Dante said that she had expected to see Vanoni in her new show in Milan, but the news of her death found her shocked. She wrote that with Ornella's departure, a part of our lives also leaves, along with her voice, intelligence, curiosity, shamelessness and her inimitable style in the interpretation of love songs.

Vanoni, born into a wealthy Milanese bourgeois family, became a central figure in the city's culture at the age of 20, when she appeared in the Piccolo Teatro and became Giorgio Strehler's muse. The repertoire created for her, with the contribution of Dario Fo, Fausto Amodei, Fiorenzo Carpi and Gino Negri, went down in history with "Le canzoni della Mala", a cycle that combined intellectual elegance with popular narrative. Later, she entered the world of Italian singer-songwriters and became associated with the Genoese School, especially with Gino Paoli, who inspired the immortal song "Senza fine". She moved freely between styles, interpreting Roberto Carlos, Edith Piaf, Tammy Wynette, but also signing historic collaborations with Vinicius de Moraes and Toquinho, including the album that helped popularize Brazilian music in Italy.

Her sensuality, pure elegance and ability to construct interpretations that defied the rules of Italian melodrama elevated Vanoni to an international level. She worked with giants of world music such as Gerry Mulligan, Gil Evans, Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Michael and Randy Brecker, and Ron Carter, leaving behind reference albums for the history of Italian discography. Despite her extraordinary success, Vanoni remained connected to the contemporary musical reality and was artistically reborn in recent years thanks to her regular appearances in “Che tempo che fa”, where the public adored her for her humor, intelligence, spontaneity and her non-conformity to conventions.

On her 90th birthday, she released the song “Ti voglio” with Elodie and Ditonellapiaga, while continuing her creativity with the project “Diverse” and her book “Vincente o perdente”, a sentimental diary of an extraordinary life. Ornella Vanoni passed away unexpectedly at her home in Milan, leaving behind an incomparable artistic legacy and a deep absence in the hearts of the Italian public and beyond.
