"Vatra, the Albanian government in exile", Ilir Ikonomi tells why he

A new biography has been brought about by way of a book about the great writer and politician Fan Noli.

The book "Apostulli" by Ilir Ikonomi describes Fan Noli in the period starting from his arrival in the USA in 1906 until 1920, when he returns to Albania. Ikonomi, invited to the show "Real Story", showed more details.

"First people like a main character in a book. We love reading fiction, but it's all about characters. Why do we like to have a character? Through his actions, his words, let's get to know the whole with all its complications. The same with these people, but they were visionaries. Faik Konica and Fan Noli were two visionaries and it is not easy to be a visionary at that time in Boston, where there were 30 thousand Albanians in 1908. These people influenced that Vatra, the organization that surrounded the Albanians, was like a government of Albania in exile. It is a government-in-exile that with the money of Vatra, of ordinary Albanians who fell into the factories of America, delegates were sent to Europe, to Paris to lobby for Albania not to be divided and this was Noli's idea and from this born the famous line "Keep mother don't be afraid you have sons in America". In 1917, on the initiative of Noli, the Albanians started a big campaign to collect money for this Albania that is today and 20 thousand dollars were collected at that time, which was worth half a million dollars and these were needed to keep the Albanian delegates at the conference of peace in Paris that would take place later in 1920", emphasized Ikonomi.

But why did he choose to bring a book about the figure of Noli?

"I chose to write about Noli because he himself wrote a lot, spoke a lot. He has left a documentation, a rich archive behind him, countless speeches and above all ideas like no one else and that is why I decided that from 1906 when he arrives in America to 1920 when he leaves for Albania, this period seems very interesting to me because it coincides with the beginnings of the Albanian state and I decided to dedicate a whole book to it. In fact, at the time when Noli was in Boston, he was very unifying, unlike the other period, and then he comes to Albania, a semi-feudal country at that time, and he wanted to make deep reforms, and this is where the problem arises. It had a vision like no other, I liked the idea that it was visionary and innovative and therefore I thought it was worth writing a whole book," he added.
