"Balkan earthquake", BILD echoes the news about Berisha's arrest:
Sali Berisha

The German media BILD has devoted an article to the "house arrest" of the former prime minister, Sali Berisha.

BILD writes that it managed to contact Berisha from house arrest to ask him about the latest developments in Albania.

The article also states that Rama wants to isolate him from the fear he feels of losing power - in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Albania in 2025.

BILD's writing:

Arrest warrant! Home arrest!

The Balkan earthquake for this 79-year-old

Chair barricades and smoke bombs in Parliament

Is Albania suddenly taking measures against corruption - or is someone there afraid of it (Berisha)

Arrested: The former president of Albania and former head of government Sali Berisha (79) is under house arrest - BILD reached him despite the communication ban.

Is Albania suddenly taking measures against corruption - or is someone afraid of this 79-year-old?

A political earthquake is currently shaking the country.

It is known that politics in the Balkans and especially in Albania can sometimes be harsh.

Corrupt politicians, bought votes, drug and mafia money, wiretapping scandals between parties and ministers being expelled because of mafia contacts: Hardly a cliché that hasn't happened yet.

But now the bastion of drug smuggling in Europe is on top of everything!

A political quarrel that has been going on for years, between the head of the socialist government Edi Rama (59) and his predecessor, former conservative president Sali Berisha (79), is heading towards a new peak.

The photos already show the former head of government showing the victory sign with both hands from the window of his apartment in Tirana.

This was preceded by a battle in court and in parliament: Just before Christmas, members of Berisha's Democratic Party tried to block a hearing in which the 79-year-old would be stripped of his immunity. They even used furniture to set up barricades and plant smoke bombs!

Berisha himself talks about Rama's revenge campaign.

He (Rama) wants to isolate him from the fear he feels of losing power - in the next parliamentary elections in Albania in 2025.

Berisha reports for BILD from house arrest.

Despite the arrest and blocking of communication, BILD manages to communicate with Berisha in Tirana. The former university professor who brought Albania out of the Stone Age communism after 1991 tells BILD:

"I feel very motivated to lead a successful fight against the second dictatorship in thirty-two years in my country.

This time it's a drug state, a mafia dictatorship."

Berisha also holds Rama personally responsible for getting him on the US sanctions list – with false information and bribes. Rama has been denying this for months. The case is the subject of a corruption scandal in the USA: The former FBI chief of New York is said to have received money and an oil license from Tirana.

Someone who knows the Balkans as well as Rama and Berisha is Elmar Brok (77, CDU). The EU Parliament's long-time foreign policy chief views Tirana with distrust and says to BILD:

"Political chaos is heading towards a new peak. It is strange that, 15 years after an alleged case, a former prime minister is placed under house arrest and a broad ban on communication even with his own party. And this before the parliamentary elections scheduled for next year..."/ Taken from 'Bild'
