May 11 as a "pardon decree", will Ilir Meta suffer the fate of Sali

Ilir Meta is praying to have Berisha's fate, and may even be willing to appear before SPAK not twice, but four times a month. It is not known when the Supreme Court may make a decision on the security measure against Meta, but what will be claimed by his lawyers will be to use the same standard as the one stated in the GJKKO Appeal decision.

Ilir Meta, President of the Freedom Party, has appealed to the Supreme Court, challenging the security measure of "prison arrest" imposed by the GJKKO in the two levels of the evaluation hearings. The appeal was filed yesterday and the Supreme Court will most likely treat the case as a priority.

Meta is more or less in the same conditions as Sali Berisha, with the only difference being that the former Prime Minister was assigned the security measure of "house arrest" due to his age, while the former President has been in prison for almost 3 months.

Meta's lawyer, Genc Gjokutaj, has used almost the same arguments in both Berisha's case and for the PL leader, regarding the reasons why security measures should be changed.

"He is the president of the PL. His arrest was made precisely for this reason. Meta has given detailed explanations, has chosen confrontation through explanations, not avoidance of the investigation. We have raised this argument, why this issue was made on the eve of the campaign in the absence of evidence. Meta does not poison evidence and does not intimidate witnesses, nor the accusers. The accusers have not had a day of school, he was not involved in this story. There is no criterion to remain in the measure of arrest with prison when he is the second leader of the opposition and on the eve of the election campaign", emphasized Gjokutaj a day ago.

But will Meta have the same fate as Berisha, having his security measures changed along the way as the election date approaches?

The "weapon" that can be used is the GJKKO Appeals decision in the case of Sali Berisha, where despite SPAK requesting the reinstatement of his arrest, the obligation to appear was imposed, remembering that he is the leader of an opposition party, while the country is heading towards elections.

"In this regard, the court takes into account that the President of the Republic of Albania, with decree no. 399, dated 05.12.2024, has decreed May 11, 2025, as the date for holding the elections for the Assembly (see Official Gazette no. 206, dated 10.12.2024). As the Constitutional Court has found in its decision no. 81, dated 19.11.2024, the applicant is the chairman of the main opposition party," the Appeal decision of the GJKKO states, among other things.

Based on this, Ilir Meta, as the leader of another party, despite the electoral weight it may have on May 11, but which today ranks as the second largest force in the opposition, can claim release from prison.

And this, despite not being emphasized much, is being used as an argument in public statements by Ilir Meta's legal defenders. The latter has so far received a guarantee from Berisha's DP that his name will be on the safe list of candidates for MPs, most likely it will be among the first 3 names in Tirana, but what interests him most is to escape isolation by taking advantage of the elections.

In this context, it seems that Ilir Meta is praying to have Berisha's fate, and may even be willing to appear before SPAK not twice, but four times a month. It is not known when the Supreme Court may make a decision on the security measure against Meta, but what will be claimed by his lawyers will be to use the same standard as the one stated in the GJKKO Appeals decision, despite the fact that the judge who articulated the decision was attacked above and below the belt by the former President's closest allies.

The elections and the fact that Meta has the stamp of one of the opposition parties are a golden opportunity, even temporarily, for the former President, arrested for corruption, "money laundering" and "hiding and undeclaring assets", to leave his cell. / Pamphlet /
