2023 is closing the chapter for DP, with the headline of the imprisonment of Sali Berisha, an act which is being applauded by his political child, Lulzim Basha.
"I think that Berisha would like to turn his arrest into a martinization, so to speak, until the last moment he is in a political act, coming out as if he were handcuffed by the dictatorship. The problem is that he has fought with the courts, with SPAK and they are the new justice that is making history, Berisha is already closed history", said analyst Artur Zheji.
The year started briskly for the Democratic Party with the fight within the party. 33 years later, this political force that brought democracy, in a completely opposite spirit, fights for the chair of the president, they went divided in local elections, they face each other legally as to who the stamp belongs to, as well as the joys they experience separately.
"There was a party with an active non grata part, which led the party to aggressiveness and conflict, while another group was almost passive in silence, and did not even participate in the elections, that is, in very few areas. The year when Basha returned, but still in inactivity. To make matters worse, the opposition this year went after a man who was not actually there to build the opposition but was there with the mission to save himself and his family", says analyst Ergys Mërtiri.
Although the demand for the arrest of the historic leader of the Democrats has stirred the political arena, analysts estimate that with the new year, better days are coming for the Albanian opposition, with new energy.
"For those who are fans of Berisha, it is a painful year, but for others who look beyond, I think that Berisha is an obstacle that must be overcome for a new time", says Zheji.
"His elimination from the political scene will open the way for new voices, a new spirit. Berisha's arrest does what Berisha should have done himself. How to say the political burial of Berisha is the exhumation of the party and an opportunity for revival", adds Mërtiri.
But Berisha's plans are quite different. He is preparing to lead the PD even under arrest; and his daughter, Argita Malltezi, is also giving him a hand for this.
"Being the father's messenger, Argita can be the plan B of the direction of the DP until it goes to the plan C, in choosing the widest forums to find the real president from the bottom up, not with a catapult. I think that either Bardhi or Basha are still looking for themselves. Politically, Berisha is like a tall tree, under whose shade only short bushes grow, and without him leaving, the true dimension of others cannot be seen", said Zheji.
Even sociologically, it is proven that when a political force passes from an old leader to a new variant, it is difficult for this young person to produce his charisma or halo. Berisha, I think, no longer trusts anyone; because even when Lulzim Basha could not protect him, he said enough in one moment; he thinks that even if he leaves Argita, he will tell him that it's enough, father, that I do this work. Maybe Argita will be at his father's feet, but this will make his political group weaker. Berisha will be even more lonely in what we call remote control action", he said according to Mërtir.
From all this internal crisis in DP, the one that benefits the most seems to be the government, which rarely in the third term was painted pink in the local elections of 2023. / Top Channel
