The Special Prosecutor's Office has given 6 hours of permission to the mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, to participate in the motoring ceremony of his grandmother, who lost her life.

Once the funeral ceremony is over, Beleri will have to return to the custody of Fier.

The funeral of the deceased will take place at 14:00 in Himara and Beleri has already been sent to Himara detention rooms and will be escorted to the cemetery to say goodbye and then he will be sent back to prison.

Fredi Beleri was arrested two days before the May 14 local elections, becoming the only candidate in Albania to be elected to public office while in prison.

The prosecution accuses Beleri of "active corruption in the elections", claiming that he has proven beyond any doubt that he had offered a police associate 50 euros for every vote he could find in his favor as mayor of Himara. His accomplice, Pandeli Kokaveshi, is accused of the same criminal act.

The latter did not appear at the hearings, but requested that the process continue in the presence of his lawyer.

Beleri has made several requests to get out of the cell in order to be sworn in and take office as Mayor of Himara, but they have been rejected by all levels of the courts.

Fredi Beleri was caught red-handed with his associate Pandeli Kokaveshi buying votes. Beleri could not take office, as the judicial authorities did not give him permission to take the oath. He, together with the Greek government, call the arrest politically motivated, and Greece has even threatened to veto Albania's integration into the European Union.
