Ambassadors of European Union countries have reacted after the attacks of the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, against the EU ambassador in Tirana, Silvio Gonzato.
In a joint statement published on social media, European diplomats expressed full support for Gonzato and his team, while describing the attacks against them as unjustified and unacceptable.
"In light of the unjustified and unacceptable criticism of the European Union and its representatives, the EU ambassadors accredited to Albania issue the following statement: Joint statement of the EU ambassadors accredited to Albania – 9 May 2026. On Europe Day, we stand united in support of the EU Ambassador and his team and reconfirm our full trust in their professionalism, integrity and dedicated service," the statement published on the ambassador's page, Avgoustides on X, which was subsequently shared by the German embassy in Tirana, on its official Facebook page.
The ambassadors' statement came a day after Berisha attacked Ambassador Silvio Gonzato, accusing him of supporting Edi Rama's government and taking a one-sided stance towards the opposition.
"Regarding the current ambassador, I have expressed it: he behaves as if he were Rama's ambassador, since this gentleman, in a pretentious manner, has transmitted the most untrue fabrications to the opposition in Brussels, as if we are not for integration. Not to mention many other things," Berisha said yesterday.
