There are holidays that people feel instinctively. Holidays that have a smell, a sound, a collective memory. Holidays that are known how they are celebrated, what they drink, where they go, who they share with. And then there is May 9, Europe Day, perhaps the strangest holiday in existence.
Many Europeans don't even know when it is. Even fewer know how to celebrate. And the biggest problem, perhaps, is that no one is quite sure what is actually being celebrated.
Perhaps because Europe celebrates the absence of something: the absence of war, tragedy, historical catastrophe. A celebration of what did not happen. For everything that is not “Guernica.” ( A painting by Picasso, considered by many art critics as the most moving and powerful anti-war painting in history ).
This is precisely the question that starts the conversation with Lea Ypi, the Albanian philosopher living in Britain and who is today considered one of the most important European intellectual voices. The meeting takes place in a pub near the Pantheon in Paris, where Ypi will hold a lecture dedicated to Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
Albania is trying to join the European Union. Britain, the country where she lives, has left it. Between these two extremes, Ypi seems like the ideal character to talk about Europe, its identity and its moral crisis.
When we arrive, she is sitting by the window with a glass of beer in front of her and a red pen in her hand. She is rereading her notes. She doesn't immediately hear the greeting. She seems focused, but not tense. More like a model student suddenly caught off guard.
A little later she laughs when she reveals that only in recent months has she developed the habit of drinking only in the pub, every Wednesday, after lectures at the Collège de France and before the train to London.
" Now they recognize me at Gare du Nord. I'm the girl who only drinks one large beer every Wednesday ," she says with humor.
Then he adds something that sounds like a personal, but also philosophical, confession: " I've always forbidden myself from drinking alone. I have a whole theory about that ."
When the conversation turns to Europe Day, Ypi doesn't seem convinced that the continent has ever managed to create a common myth around it.
" That's the problem. It's a holiday that celebrates a statement, not a lived event ," she says.
She recalls that on May 9, 1950, when Robert Schuman made the historic declaration that is considered the symbolic birth of modern Europe, there were not even any photographers in the hall. Later, Schuman was forced to reenact the scene just to create a historical image.

“Në Shqipëri kemi festuar fundin e komunizmit. Ajo po që ishte festë. Kishte frikë, pasiguri, shpresë, të gjitha bashkë”, shton ajo.
Ajo ishte vetëm 13 vjeçe kur pa kapitalizmin të hynte në vend pas rënies së regjimit.
“Për shumë prej nesh ishte moment lirie. Mund të votoje. Mund të udhëtoje. Kishte një shpresë të jashtëzakonshme”, tregon Ypi.
Por entuziazmi nuk zgjati gjatë. “Format e vjetra të shtypjes u zhdukën, por lindën forma të tjera”, deklaron ajo.
Shqiptarët që largoheshin drejt Italisë përballeshin me racizëm. Kultura, dikur e censuruar por e aksesueshme për të gjithë, u kthye në privilegj ekonomik. Marrëdhëniet njerëzore nisën të funksiononin sipas logjikës së tregut.
“Gjithçka që lidhej me solidaritetin mes fqinjëve u shndërrua në transaksion ekonomik. Kjo është një humbje që nuk matet dot”, thekson Ypi.
Në qendër të mendimit të Lea Ypit qëndron ideja e “socializmit moral”, koncept mbi të cilin po ndërton librin e saj të ardhshëm.
Ajo e dallon qartë nga socializmi shtetëror që njohu si fëmijë dhe nga socialdemokracia europiane që, sipas saj, humbi terren në vitet ’80 dhe ’90.
“Politika nuk kontrollon më tregjet. Sot politika krijon kushtet që tregjet të ndjekin edhe më mirë logjikën e fitimit”, tha filozofja shqiptare.
Pyetja që e udhëheq është e drejtpërdrejtë: “A mund të bëhet politikë pa vlera?”
Për Ypin, socializmi moral është rikthimi i vlerave në politikë.
Në mënyrë interesante, e gjithë filozofia e saj sillet rreth një koncepti që rrallë lidhet me socializmin: liria.
“Ashtu si Rousseau, edhe unë nisem nga një evidencë: çdo qenie njerëzore lind e lirë. Dhe nga një tjetër evidencë: gjithçka që na largon nga kjo liri”, shton ajo.
Në tavolinë qëndron një çantë me portretin e Rosa Luxemburgut. Ypi buzëqesh kur e vëren.
“Më është dhuruar në Hanoi. Por citimi mbi çantë më duket pak i ekzagjeruar”, thotë Ypi.
Ajo është e veshur me të kuqe të ndezur: këpucë, xhaketë lëkure, buzëkuq. “Pamja e plotë e revolucionares”, thotë me ironi.
Më vonë rrëfen historinë e parë të jetës së saj me Rousseau-n. Ishte në Shqipërinë komuniste, kur si fëmijë u rrëzua në rrugë dhe disa turistë francezë iu afruan për ta ndihmuar. Ata i ofruan dy gjëra të ndaluara nga regjimi: karamele dhe të fliste frëngjisht.
Ajo nuk pranoi ëmbëlsirat. Por kur dëgjoi njërin prej tyre të thoshte se “ndoshta vajza nuk kupton frëngjisht”, reagoi menjëherë duke recituar vargjet e “Të mjerëve”:
“Rashë përdhe,
faji i Volterit,
hunda në baltë,
faji i Rousseau-së.”
Sot Lea Ypi flet gjashtë gjuhë: shqip, anglisht, frëngjisht, gjermanisht, italisht dhe spanjisht. Por ajo thotë se çdo gjuhë ka funksionin e vet.
" German is the language of philosophy and work. Not of emotions ," she says.
When asked how Europe can be "re-enchanted," its answer is clear: by restoring the moral radicalism of the Enlightenment.
" Today the alternative to capitalism is offered mainly by the right and the far right. The left is closed to compromise ," she says.
According to her, freedom in modern societies has been reduced to consumer choices: " Being free doesn't just mean choosing what you buy or where you travel. It means being able to ask yourself what makes you truly free ."
The conversation ends as the Pantheon begins to fill with people outside. Before leaving, Ypi pauses for a moment and returns to Rousseau.
“ If a nine-year-old Albanian girl could meet Rousseau through a few verses recited to tourists she was taught to fear, and if today she can stand in the Pantheon to pay homage to his thought, then the circulation of ideas across borders and regimes is not a philosophical dream. It is the result of action ,” she says.
Perhaps that is precisely where the answer for Europe on May 9th lies: not in the celebration of an institution, but in the belief that ideas, freedom and dignity can survive beyond borders, systems and time. /Adapted from “Pamphlet” by “ Le Grand Continent ”

Kjo shkrimtarja disidente qe kur ishte 12 vjeçe… Mire e ka qe llomotit ne fakt, se me kete nivel te debatit politik verdalle, keta tipat me patologji qe ne pubertet e te rekrutuar neper “grupe debati” dy-tre vite me vone jane te vetmit te vendosur ne pozite per te llomotitur e shkaterruar ne emer te progresit
Mire e ke mor vella. Ne anej ka nohija jone i themi hapje bythesh. Por me e sakte qe keta 12 vjecaret e ikur e qe kane lindur ne vende te tjera ose i kane shpelare nga trute te punoje per dike nje dite, ose fluturojne me pras. Kemi femije vete e po shophim qe nuk po na perkasin me ne e Shqiperise. Une jetoj atje ku jeton kjo e jam shume i lenduar qe shumica e femijeve Shqiptare nuk flasin Shqip, sidomos pjesa me prinder injorante.
Kjo vajza eshte shume e ditur, por harron te komentoje se si Britaniket e Europa nuk e kane idene per data historike elementare si 1 Maj, 8 Mars e te historise se tyre kombetare. Tani na paska dale Shqiptarka e na u ben leksione Francezeve per Volter e Russo e tu tregoje klasifikimin e gjuheve Europiane.
Ka hallin e Evropës kjo, gjersa vendi i saj zien nga grekoshkijet! Kujt i duhet kjo "altruiste" pa gravitacion?!
Mund te kesh njohuri ne filozofi, por te jesh filozof eshte dhunti njerezore te cilen Zoti nuk j'ua ka dhene pak njerezve. Eshte shume ironike per Shqiptare qe jetojne jashte vendi, e komentojne gjendjen politiko shoqerore atje. Qeveritaret europiane per popullin e tyre jane shume te pergjegjshem se ndryshe do ishin si neve, katrahure. Ka edhe atje probleme, por ne themel qytetaret e tyre kane force ne vendimarrje dhe i riparojne problemet. Edhe kjo zonja po te jere me keq atje, nuk e ndalon kush te vije te jetoje, e te kontriboje si e shkolluar dhe e ditur ne Shqiperi. Keto lloj propagande duhet te marrin fund. Zonja nese ka ndikim ne qeverite europiane te kontribojne per Shqiperine kjo do ishte me e mire. Jo te merret me pse festihet keshtu apo ashtu 9 maj.
Dynjaja e perdor leximin, eksperiencat e te tjereve, per te kthjelluar ca mendime kurse shqipet e perdorin si ilaç per te nxitur jashteqitjen e mendimeve te tyre te dhjera. Po te jete shqiptar/e personazhi qe lexojne kalojne direkt ne diarrhe.
