Former official convicted of corruption invested in property with money from suspicious transfers, loans and "debt settlements"
A senior state official has been caught laundering money. The Financial Intelligence Agency has published its annual work report for the past year and has revealed that a former official, already convicted of corruption, has begun laundering money stolen from the people.
According to the report, the former official signed business contracts during 2024 for the booking of an apartment worth 60 thousand euros, a parking lot worth 35 thousand euros, and a commercial unit worth 60 thousand euros. The report does not mention his name, but it is noted that he is known.
But what has raised suspicions among financial authorities is not just the property investments, but the way the funds were secured.
An analysis of bank accounts revealed that the money did not come from clear income or declared economic activity, but from numerous deposits and transfers from third parties.
In total, around 140 thousand euros were deposited into the former official's accounts through "donations", "loans", "debt settlements" and other transfers with unclear connections between the parties.
According to financial intelligence experts, this is one of the classic forms of money laundering used to avoid direct suspicions about the real origin of the funds.
The scheme works by fragmenting payments into different amounts and using third parties to create the idea of legitimate financial sources.
Instead of the funds passing directly from the suspect, they are distributed through family, friendship networks or other informal connections, posing as loans, gifts or debt repayments.
Another element that has raised the alarm is the fact that properties were purchased at prices significantly lower than the real market value.
This is considered a practice often used in money laundering schemes, where lower prices are declared in contracts to hide the real value of transactions and the origin of funds.
The report also highlights that the transfers were concentrated in a short period of time and had as their main purpose the acquisition of real estate and the granting of loans.
According to the report, investing in property remains one of the safest ways to "launder" money of dubious origin, as real estate creates a formal cover and makes it more difficult to trace the original source of funds.
In many cases, after purchase, the properties are resold, rented out, or used as financial collateral, introducing suspicious money into legitimate economic circulation.
In this specific case, authorities have raised doubts not only about the source of the funds, but also about the structuring of the transfers and the unclear connections between the people who transferred the money.
For these reasons, the file has been sent for further investigation to law enforcement agencies. / Pamphlet
