Ferit Hoxha calls Greek counterpart, focuses on pending issues...
The arrival of Feri Hoxha at the head of the Foreign Ministry was well received in Athens. Fredi Beleri was among the first to greet him, as Hoxha's ties with Greece are very old.
Ferit Hoxha is also one of the architects of the maritime agreement with Greece, signed during the time of Sali Berisha.
That agreement was overturned by the Constitutional Court 9-0 and the initiator group was placed under investigation by the prosecution, but Adriatik Llalla at that time gave Berisha a pass, ceasing the investigations, even though Greece had been granted Albanian territory. Ferit Hoxha at that time was Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and chief negotiator, therefore the main person responsible after Lulzim Basha, who signed the agreement.
Since he was appointed minister, there were suspicions that he would be used this time by the socialist government for the same thing, to close the 2009-2010 agreement that was overturned by the Court. And today the first signals have been given.
Ferit Hoxha, through a post on "X", announced that he had a telephone conversation with his Greek counterpart, George Gerapetritis.
Although he does not mention the maritime border issue, he states that there has been talk of addressing pending issues, and the unresolved issue is the maritime agreement.
“ Today I had a first telephone conversation, friendly and future-oriented, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Greece, Mr. George Gerapetritis.
We reaffirmed our commitment to advance Albanian-Greek relations in a constructive spirit, based on the strategic partnership as NATO allies and a shared European perspective.
This exchange was a valuable opportunity to review the current state of relations and identify concrete ways to further strengthen cooperation.
"We agreed on the importance of a sustainable and results-oriented political dialogue, based on mutual respect and sincere partnership, for constructively and pragmatically addressing bilateral issues, as well as for advancing projects that promote good neighborly relations, connectivity, people-to-people contacts and regional stability ," he said.
The agreement between Greece and Albania on the maritime borders between the two countries was signed on 26 January 2010 in Tirana. The pact was signed by the two foreign ministers at the time, Dora Bakoyannis from the Greek side and Lulzim Basha, former foreign minister. The agreement sparked debate, after the Constitutional Court overturned the pact, declaring it unconstitutional.
