Today, the Freedom Party has sent a letter to the General Director of the State Police, Ilir Proda, and the Minister of the Interior, Ervin Hoxha, asking them for information on the arrest of Ilir Meta.
In a statement, the General Secretary of PL, Tedi Blushi, says that they want to have information about the names of the alleged police officers who, according to him, committed the serious act against Ilir Meta.
According to Blushi, these two institutions must return answers by November 7.
Blushi emphasizes, among other things, that the arrest of Ilir Meta was made in violation of the law. He says that if their names are not forwarded, the path of justice will be followed, by criminal charges.
"Ilir Proda will be the one who will be held criminally responsible and we will charge him with two criminal offences, failure to report a crime and abuse of office", said Blushi.
The chairman of the Freedom Party in Albania, Ilir Meta, was arrested by order of the Special Prosecutor against Corruption (SPAK) on October 21, on suspicion of "corruption, money laundering, non-declaration and concealment of assets".
Meta had served as the president of Albania from 2017 to 2022.
In addition to the post of president, Meta had also been prime minister, speaker of the Assembly and minister of foreign affairs. The State Police said that they implemented the regulation when they arrested the former president Meta.
According to this institution, the request for arrest was made by SPAK.
What did SPAK say?
SPAK states that Meta and his wife "in collaboration with each other, but also with other public officials, were involved in the commission of several criminal offenses".
The investigations against Meta started in 2019 in connection with the affair known as ÇEZ-DIA, which is related to the privatization of the energy distribution company and the collection of remaining debts.
Three years later, another case has been opened, following a complaint about payments worth thousands of euros undeclared by the party led by Meta, for lobbying in the United States.
The two cases are then merged into a single one in 2024.
The Special Prosecutor's Office says that Meta, in his capacity as Minister of Economy, Trade and Energy, "used his authority and influence to interfere in the selection process of the DIA company to collect CEZ's debts, even though it did not meet the legal criteria and professional".
The prosecution says that Meta, as Speaker of the Assembly, and his wife as a deputy, in 2014 used their influence to introduce a company to the optical fiber market and then benefited from a percentage of the company's profits.
The Chairman of the Electronic and Postal Communications Agency (AKEP) Piro Xhixho, for whom the security measure "house arrest" has been imposed, is said to have influenced the leaders of the mobile phone company for the finalization of the agreement, but on the other hand, he allowed the company private to exercise its activity in violation of the AKEP law.
The investigations also showed that Meta and his wife did not declare the medical expenses incurred during the period 2013-2019, in the total value of 106 thousand euros.
Investigations are ongoing, with the aim of gathering evidence and to understand the involvement of other persons in these activities.
SPAK has thanked the law enforcement authorities of the United States of America, Austria, Italy, San Marino, Cyprus and the State Police for their cooperation.
Earlier, Meta's lawyer, Genc Gjokutaj, said that the former president was "kidnapped in a bandit way".
"The moment is political. The Rama-Dumani duo and with the help of the masses, the former collaborators of Meta, have formed a decision that we have just taken. His position is quite clear, he is determined to face the process. They were kidnapped on the street the former prime minister, the former president", he said.
Meta had announced a press conference for 13:40 and was traveling to his party headquarters when he was arrested.
Meanwhile, today the MP of the Freedom Party Monika Kryemadhi has complained about the security measure "obligation to appear" in the Special Appeal. However, in implementation of the measure that GJKKO assigned to her on October 21, she appeared this Monday at 12:00 at SPAK. Even the lawyers of former President Ilir Meta will submit today the appeal for the measure of "prison arrest". / Pamphlet
