The former leader of the Democrats, Lulzim Basha, has come out against the SP-PD agreement on the Electoral Reform, which stipulates that 1/3 of the lists will be closed and 2/3 open. Even though he was at the head of the Democratic Party for over 8 years, he has now remembered to submit to the Assembly the amendment that provides for 100% open lists.
"I have just officially submitted to Albania the amendment that foresees the open lists of the Assembly", Basha said in a statement to the media.
According to him, the SP and DP have made a bargain against the interests of the citizens, in order to include in the lists deputies who serve their presidents.
"It enables a political force not to be forced by the basic principles of democracy to submit a closed list, but an open list with many names, which will be the only basis for future deputies. Deputies will be elected name by name, respecting gender quotas by citizens and not by party leaders.
It was submitted today and tomorrow will be one of the tests to enable the Euro-Atlantic Democratic Party to compete with a 100% open list, regardless of whether SP and Rithemelimi want to continue on the dead-end road of closed lists.
We will continue the battle, not to accept closed lists like this ugly bazaar of this evening, as an objective decision of a handful of deputies who are not even voted by their own house. The two camps, Berisha and Rama, are closing the lists to serve their leaders", Basha continued.
