Will you announce new elections in Himare? Rama: We have to wait for the trial

Prime Minister Edi Rama, in an interview for Kathimerini, was asked if he will announce new elections in Himare.

Rama said that we have to wait for the trial for Beler and that elections may not take place until it is judged whether he is guilty or innocent.

Journalist: Well then, Mr. Prime Minister, now what are you going to do? Will you announce new elections in Himare?

"Here I can give you an exclusivity.", said Rama.

Reporter: An exclusivity is always a good thing

Rama: But I'm not sure I should say it. First, let's say that in Albania it is not the government that announces elections but the president. Anyway, the procedure is like this, if the elected mayor does not appear after 90 days of being sworn in, then the government must relieve him of his duties and install a technical mayor until the new elections are held, which will be announced by the president. I asked my lawyers to look into the matter and I don't know the outcome. But it seems to me that this case is special, there is no precedent. So, my instinct tells me, my psychological reaction tells me that maybe we should wait for the trial. Thus, we may not make new choices until he is found guilty or not guilty.

But this is not a legal position, it is exactly what I think should be done since we have no precedents. Yes, I think we can do one or the other, based on the legal office report, I believe we have the option to not act until the court decides. In this case we give everyone a chance to consider the matter to the end. If this is not legally possible, we will have to release him from office.
