The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, stated that Prime Minister Edi Rama has been secretly lobbying to temporarily block Albania's integration process into the European Union.
In a public statement, Berisha said that Rama had held a meeting in London with a British Foreign Ministry official, where, according to him, he had requested that Albania not be granted EU candidate country status at that moment.
According to Berisha, the request had been for the status to be postponed for about six months, so that it would not appear to have been achieved during the Democratic Party's government. He claimed that the British side was surprised by this request and had taken notes of the conversation.
"He went to London and requested a meeting with the director of the Foreign Office for the region. The British side told him that this cannot happen because in our protocols a prime minister cannot be received by a director in our Foreign Ministry. No, he said I don't want to. And all of this is with witnesses. In the end, the British side finds a practical solution. He doesn't receive him in the office, he goes to Edi Rama's hotel... His request was to block the candidate's status and give it to us after 6 months so that it doesn't seem like we are taking it from the government that was there. He took a surprised note. The managing director transmitted it to our ambassador, who had not been informed of the meeting.
He said: this meeting has never happened in my life. He only pushed it today so that it wouldn't turn out that it was the work of the DP. We lost the elections and voted for the 3 laws. It didn't occur to us to give it back with these coins. He goes and lobbies against it. I showed this example to show the Albanians what kind of scum this man is and what he deserves. He is dreaming of a European passport with that of Serbia, it is an act like what Enver Hoxha did to Kosovo. The highest act of betrayal. Today the supreme interest of Albanians is integration into the EU. He is trampling on this interest only for his own interests ," he said.
Berisha described this action as against the interests of the country's European integration and accused the prime minister of acting for personal political reasons.
