When you think that the debate about Zvërnec, Sazan and the luxury resorts has remained between Vlora, Tirana and some office in Athens or Belgrade, the alarm comes that the issue has reached Melbourne and Sydney. Yes, yes, even the Greeks of Australia are moving in the direction of the fate of the Albanian coast.
According to Greek diaspora media in faraway Australia , the next protest against strategic investments in southern Albania is an international battle for the rights of the Greek minority.
This story also includes the name of Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, who seems to have managed to unite local activists, minority organizations, and commentators who follow Albanian developments from 15,000 kilometers away into a single front.
Listening to some of the reactions, one gets the impression that Zvërnec is not located in the Gulf of Vlorë, but somewhere between the Peloponnese and Crete. Every investment, every permit and every tourist project in southern Albania is treated as a Greek national issue, while Albanians must get used to the idea that there are always more people worried about their coast outside the country than inside the country.
The paradox is that for decades, when Albanians raised their voices about their properties in Greece or about the rights of immigrants, the response was; a shrug of the shoulders. But it is enough to mention a foreign investment in the Albanian Riviera and a network of reactions is immediately activated from Athens to Melbourne.
In the end, the question arises: is the concern really for the environment, for property and cultural heritage, or are we dealing with another ordinary chapter where every development in southern Albania is read through the lenses of Northern Epirus?
One thing is certain. Zvërnec has managed to do what Balkan diplomacy does not often achieve: to bring together Vlora, Athens, Belgrade, Ankara, Tel Aviv, Washington and the Greek community of Australia in the debate./ Pamphlet
