Why don't you clear the mountains of drug plots, why don't you stop deforestation, quarries, and resorts that are flattening the greenery within protected areas and along the coast?

"Après moi, le déluge", the French say metaphorically, which means, 'after me, the doomsday'. Thus, after thousands of hectares of forests were burned, Prime Minister Edi Rama called on Albanians to join on August 26 in his initiative called "Clean Mountains", to clean 10 natural parks, as part of a movement to protect the environment.

But this initiative remains a mere propaganda action. It comes after the government's decisions to facilitate the burning of nearly 50,000 hectares of forests, olive plantations, trees and livestock, and even houses in Gramsh, Delvinë, Vlorë and Fier, the burning of which could have been prevented if the emergency services had functioned properly.

In this “show” action, Rama will use groups of patronage activists, led by ministers, deputies, mayors, prefects and directors, who will film themselves filling bags with garbage and cars with garbage. The goal is not the protection of nature, but personal propaganda and the illusion that the Prime Minister cares about the mountains and natural parks, which, in fact, have been left to degrade and have been destroyed by government decisions.

If Rama is serious about protecting nature, why doesn't he stop deforestation and why doesn't he reforest areas destroyed by logging and burning?

Why doesn't it block the oligarchs' quarries that flatten hills within natural parks and protected areas, and continue to grant construction permits?

For example, just one building permit granted to Idajet Ismail has concreted 55 hectares of protected forest area within the Butrint Natural Park, while along the coast of Vlorë-Orikum-Himarë-Borsh, Lukovë, Kakome-Saranda-Ksamil, permits have been granted for the construction of concrete hotels and resorts.

The concreting maps have also been expanded to the coast of Kavaja, Lalzit, Velipoja and along the Pogradec-Drilon lake. Even partners Fatmir Bektashi and Jamarbër Malltezi have received permission to build without authorization within natural parks.

If the "Clean Mountains" initiative had real meaning, the Prime Minister would clean up drug plots in Shkodër, Kukës, Dibër, Mat, Kurbin, Lezhë, Vlorë, Saranda, Berat, Kuçovë, Elbasan, Mallakastër, Tepelenë and Përmet. But his three-hour action a year is simply propaganda, while he has not taken any concrete decisions for afforestation and stopping destruction.

For example, in the Labinot natural park, 20 hectares were given to Gjergj Lucës to cut down forests and build an energy park; on Mount Kanina in Vlora, 810 hectares of green area are disappearing to build a photovoltaic energy park; while Pëllumb Salillari has received a construction permit for a water supply and water plant at the Sinec waterfall in Lumas, Kuçova, eliminating forests and concreting the area.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister continues to put on a 'show' with actions to clean up mountains and natural parks, promoting the law called the "Mountains Package", which favors the concreting of his clients, rather than the real protection of nature.

In the end, the "Clean Mountains" initiative is more of a propaganda spectacle than an effort to preserve the environment. Forests and natural parks continue to degrade under government decisions, while the Prime Minister appears as a protector of nature, only for show./ Pamphlet
