The only mandate that the Albania Is Done Initiative won in the May 11 elections will remain with Ana Dajko.
Today, the Electoral College upheld the decision of the KAS, which awarded the sole mandate of the Albania Becomes Initiative to the first on the list, Ana Dajko, thus resolving the clash between Adriatik Lapaj of Albania Becomes and Endrit Shabani from the Thurje Initiative.
Initially, Lapaj and the coalition had requested that the mandate be passed to him, as the most voted candidate on the open list. But the State Commissioner awarded it to Lapaj's cousin, Kleana Xhuveli. The KAS later reversed this decision, not recognizing the resignations submitted before the elections and awarding the mandate to Dajko.
60-year-old Ana Dajko is the mother of Vasil Dajko, a member of the leadership of the "Albania Becomes Movement", and also turns out to be Lapaj's cousin. She has completed secondary education, while she is self-employed.
According to the agreement reached earlier between the two parties that make up the coalition, "Nisma Thurje" and "Albania Becomes", the candidates on the closed list had previously signed a resignation from their mandate, to pave the way for the candidates on the open list.
In this scenario, the mandate would pass to Adriatik Lapaj as the most voted candidate.
But the situation became tense when Zeqir Kordhoni, a relative of the other coalition leader, Endri Shabani, submitted a request to take over the mandate. According to Shabani and Kordhoni, this request was based on an earlier statement by Lapaj, who, according to them, had promised to give up the mandate if the coalition secured just one seat in the Assembly.
This decision by the College today paves the way for the final certification of the elections.
Meanwhile, the current Assembly's term ends on September 9, while the new parliament is expected to begin no more than 10 days later. The opening session will be only constitutive, without an agenda and without debates. The Assembly's rules of procedure stipulate that the oldest MP takes the lead in the first session. Even in this legislature, it is Sali Berisha's turn, who is 81 years old.
In case of refusal, the baton will be taken by Tritan Shehu or Vasil Llajo, the socialist MP from the Vlora list. Immediately after the opening, the Assembly will begin verifying the mandates and then the 140 new MPs will take the oath./ Pamphlet
