Rama does not rule out the possibility of holding elections for the capital's municipality...
Prime Minister Edi Rama has left open the possibility of calling early elections in Tirana. For several months, he has been working under the rug in the largest municipality in the country, and today he gave the first signal that everything remains open for the replacement of Erion Veliaj.
Invited to the show "Opinion", he said that he wanted to see a range of opinions on how the issue of the Tirana Municipality should be handled, given that its mayor, Erion Veliaj, is in prison.
-Will Erion Veliaj continue to be mayor of Tirana?
Edi Rama: I don't know, we'll see about that later. I don't know.
- So will there be early elections in Tirana or will it be waited until the court makes a decision?
Edi Rama: I don't know, I wanted to see a range of opinions. Not one, but several opinions to understand how this should be handled.
We recall that SPAK has named the head of the Municipality of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, as a defendant.
He has been in custody since February 10 of this year. Veliaj is accused of "passive corruption" and was recently charged with concealing assets, charges which he has denied.
In the same criminal file, SPAK is also investigating his wife, Ajola Xoxa, as well as 4 other businessmen.
Since his arrest, Rama has placed Anuela Ristan in charge of the municipality. Also, since then, Rama has never mentioned Veliaj again. Initially, he attacked SPAK, but then distanced himself and dismissed all of Veliaj's loyalists from office.
