The coup d'état of September 14, 1998 will be remembered as one of the ugliest events in a democratic state, whose government, led by Prime Minister Fatos Nano, had emerged from the free vote of the citizens. The Albanian people have embedded in their memory how the then opposition, led by Sali Berisha, armed with automatic weapons, anti-tank and grenade launchers, destroyed the institutions and with two tanks attacked the Prime Minister's office with force, to overthrow the government of Fatos Nanos. This ugly, violent event for a democratic state echoed in the foreign media, spoiling the image of Albania. The former head of the State Information Service, Fatos Klosi, and the well-known analyst, Frrok Çupi, in a statement for the "Sot" newspaper, recount the unsaid of the violent protest of September 14, 1998. Fatos Klosi says that this event was very ugly and shameful not only by those who organized it, but also by the government of that time, led by Prime Minister Nano. Klosi declares that Fatos Nano was aware of the coup that the opposition was preparing and ran away in fear before the coup d'état happened, leaving the state at the mercy of fate. The former head of SHISH stated that Nano had a plan to flee to Italy on September 13, but ended up hiding in Macedonia. According to him, Nano left the state in the hands of those who destroyed the institutions. "Fatos Nano left before the coup. We all knew that they would do something, but we had no idea that they would go so far as to destroy the state. The departure of the prime minister was really a very difficult situation for the state. Nobody knew in Albania where the prime minister was!? Neither the President nor his ministers knew. There was no need for the prime minister to go so far that no one would know! The situation was dire, but the prime minister could go to Dajt or somewhere else. Since the 13th, the prime minister wanted to flee to Italy, but fled to Macedonia," Klosi declared.
The murder of Azem Hajdar
Further, Fatos Klosi confesses that the murder of Azem Hajdari served as an indication that the opposition of that time organized a coup d'état against the government and the institutions of the Albanian state. "The murder of Azem Hajdar was used as an indication for the launch of the coup d'état; the corpse of the late Azem Hajdari was sent to the door of the Prime Minister's office. This was an event organized long ago. I don't know what was the real purpose of this event? Maybe to show what we can do with the state. What happened next proved to be a dead end. Because what would they do the next day? Who would be declared prime minister? Those deputies who were in the Assembly of the party that organized the coup d'état could not build the rule of law. Even those who were in power were not up to the task," said Klosi. Fatos Klosi remembers this event with regret, as the state collapsed. The former head of SHISH says that the coup d'état was left in the middle by the organizers themselves, since the PD and its deputies in the Parliament could not create the rule of law. "It was really a very serious event. The state was destroyed. The Guard tried to protect the Prime Minister, but the Guard itself crumbled. There were several injured. The organizers entered the state offices by force. No one opposed this violent organization. The police dispersed. The organizers themselves left in the middle what they had started. Surely someone said to him: What will you do tomorrow? Here you got the offices, what are you going to do, I will share the offices? It is impossible in a democracy to pretend to take power with a coup d'état. Those who had the state in their hands did not try at all to protect it.
Çupi flet për tentativat për të pushtuar ambasadën e SHBA
Ndërkohë nga ana tjetër, analisti i njohur, Frrok Çupi duke hequr një paralele mes të sotmes dhe asaj që ka ndodhur 25 vite më parë, analisti Çupi u shpreh gjatë një prononcimi për gazetën “SOT”, se Berisha nuk është më ai i pari. Sipas tij, në vitin e mbrapsht 1998, Berisha përveç institucionet, synonte që të pushtonte edhe ambasadën amerikane në Tiranë, dëshirë kjo që mbetet ëndërr në sirtarë, për shkak të presionit të madh amerikan që u ushtrua ndaj ish-kryeministrit. “Në vitin 1998 ka ndodhur vetëm një ngjarje tronditëse ku Shtetet e Bashkuara u detyruan të ndërhyjnë me përpikëri. Berisha kishte ngrehur luftën dhe kishte deklaruar se kishte marrë qeverinë. Televizionin e morën dhe dhanë lajmin se ‘qeveria është në dorën tonë’. Si në Afrikën e prapambetur. Edhe disa ministri kishin rënë. Arkivolin e Azem Hajdarit e kishin futur në hollin e kryeministrisë, duke përdorur arkivolin si ‘kokë- dashin’ në 8 janar 2021, për të thyer portën e jashtme të kryeministrisë. Kishin kapur edhe disa tanke të Gardës së Republikës dhe po i hynin Tiranës në themel me qëllim pushtimin dhe shpalljen e Revolucionit Fitimtar. Një nga tanket ishte nisur për të sulmuar Ambasadën e Shteteve të Bashkuara, sipas burimeve pranë Berishës”, deklaroi ai për gazetën “SOT”.
Uashingtoni alarmohet me Berishën
Më tej analisti i njohur, Frrok Çupi ka treguar për gazetën “SOT” edhe arsyen e madhe që zbythi Sali Berishën në vitin 1998. Sipas tij, Berishën e morën në telefon nga Uashingtoni dhe i vendosën ultimatum që të tërhiqej e mos shkaktonte dhunë. Kështu që siç thotë analisti Çupi, kjo telefonatë solli kthesën e madhe në një kohë që Shqipëria prej disa ditësh ishte në kaos. “Kryeministri Nano kishte lënë zyrën dhe kishte shmangur gjakderdhjen. E vetmja ndërhyrje nga Shtetet e Bashkuara ishte kjo: ‘Alo, Saliu je?’‘Po, unë jam që mos qofsha! Më gënjyen këta të mijtë!’ ‘Mirë, mirë; por mos humbim kohë…’‘Yessir’. Merr tanket, çoji në Gardë, nxirr huliganët nga Televizioni Kombëtar dhe nga kryeministria…’‘Yes, sir!’‘Noë, noë!… ( Tani, tani!) Kjo ka ndodhur atëherë. Por atëherë ishte 24 vjet më parë, shtetin e kishte shkatërruar Berisha dhe e kishte gati për ta ngrënë vetë. Nuk kishte institucione. Kishte vetëm shumë huliganë dhe kriminelë rreth Berishës…, kjo ishte garancia e tij. Tani asgjë nga këto nuk ekziston. Nuk ekziston më Saliu si mundësi për luftë e terror, as për politikë. S’kanë si ekzistojnë ngjashmëritë e tjera, kur nuk ngjan as Saliu me Saliun”, deklaroi analisti i njohur, Frrok Çupi për gazetën “SOT”.
