Today, Meta and Berisha are allies, united by the great trouble that each of them has with justice, because Ilir Meta is in prison accused of corruption, while Berisha is under house arrest, also accused of corruption.
Ilir Meta and Sali Berisha are two of the main protagonists of political developments in Albania during the last 34 years. Sometimes as opponents and often as collaborators, they have had a significant impact on the country's politics. This topic brings to mind a period when they were in a fierce battle of accusations among themselves. This was the moment when Berisha was in his first term as prime minister and Meta was in the opposition as head of the LSI. The clash between them was related to the constitutional changes, but they did not spare each other with harsh accusations of corruption during the country's leadership. In a parliamentary session in 2008, Meta made serious accusations against Prime Minister Berisha for the Gërdec incident and his connections with the Serbian businessman Fazllic.
Berisha, on the other hand, responded with the same harshness, calling Meta "Ilir Floriri" and accusing him of robbing the gold in Kërrabë.
Ilir Meta's statements:
"Kosta Trebicka, the most courageous citizen who testified against corruption, lost his life. I do not want to assume the attributes of the prosecution and local and international experts, but I say with conviction that the public opinion has been shocked by this loss, even if it was accidental. I would like to know if it is true what another resident stated on "Top Channel" television that at the moment the deceased was dying and the law enforcement authorities were notified, he was asked not to touch him until the police arrived. Regardless of any type of accident, an attempt is always made to give first aid to each person.
This responsible prime minister, who has been accused of a scandal of terrible proportions, where 26 citizens lost their lives, did not care if this witness or others are protected by the state because of the affair of great proportions. Instead of being the first investigator of the prosecution, he dares to openly violate this independent institution, according to the Constitution of the Republic of Albania".
Berisha's answer:
Sali Berisha - "Dear Mr. President of the session, first of all, allow me to express my satisfaction that you are leading this session. The opposition does not react against the independent investigation because of Fazllic, but out of fear that tomorrow the international investigators will reveal that his name is not Ilir Meta, but Ilir Floriri. The investigation is decided by the majority in the Parliament and you can be sure of that. This Parliament will act in the best interest of this country and transparency. You see yourself in your dreams and it is not my fault; you have it yourself".
Berisha reinforced the accusations against Meta for the theft of gold, stating that the state treasury was stolen in '97 and then Meta tried to bill it to others.
Ilir Meta's response:
"Regardless of this luxury and comfort that the capoband of the state and the Government enjoys, I want to assure you that Berisha will answer to justice for everything, including the gold of Kërraba that he stole in '97. He will also answer for the gold he gave to Fazllic and others", Meta would declare.
There have been many moments of clashes between them, even in the archives there are mutual accusations about the issues for which they are currently arrested, CEZ DIA and the privatization of the former club Partizani.
Today, Meta and Berisha have become allies due to problems with justice; Meta is in prison for corruption, while Berisha is under house arrest for the same charge./ Topic
