Former minister and long-time socialist Arben Malaj has spoken openly about the situation in the SP and the government. He was invited to the podcast "Të Pashoq" on the "Pamphlet" channel on "YouTube". Malaj said that the 2008 pact between Rama and Berisha degraded politics. He did not spare Rama either, saying that he likes Erdogan's model. Also according to Malaj, the country is in the hands of a group of people.
-Since 2013, you are no longer part of Parliament and politics. How did you leave it at that time and how do you find your multi-dimensional assessment of the state of Parliament and politics today?
If we follow it in dynamics, the Parliament has a worsening trend. The turning point was the Constitutional amendment in 2008. Where some of us MPs did not vote. I had a debate with Rama in the Presidency of the SP. The parties lost democracy. Political parties turned into a SHPK with a single partner. The killing of internal democracy also shows the quality in the Parliament, government, etc. When candidates were elected by the base, the base knew the people. When candidates for MPs are mandated by the president, no one enjoys it, but I see many cases of misuse of the political mandate. Also, the SP should not make an alliance with strong people who brought votes, who ran and left with the approval of the decriminalization law. The phenomenon came in a chain from the highest level and down.
-If we start from 2013, the leader of the SP came to power with an undisputed strength, you had a list of expectations of what the SP would be like. She has mandates, what are your expectations?
Votes are sought on the basis of promises, but here in our country, promises are more for winning the mandate than for necessarily fulfilling it. 3 mandates are too many. Voters have voted for the Socialist Party, sometimes with allies and sometimes alone. Long and fixed power, or absolute power, is the worst disease that corrodes a country. A good leadership, knowing these risks, must find ways to protect itself from them. The best way is to allow dissenting opinions, to allow opposition, to behave with the opposition as if you were in the opposition.
-How would you describe Rama as Prime Minister from 2013 to today?
There are some achievements, but a leader must make sustainable achievements. A harmonized development of the country is needed. In 2025, Albania tries to attract businessmen with the 1 euro package. Europe applied it in 1989. We don't have to waive taxes. It was not a program based on social cohesion. Rama's economic model does not match our philosophy. It is the concentration of development in a few hands, the concentration of money in a few hands. Then the risk arises that businessmen influence the law and the state is captured.
-The Prime Minister is seeking a fourth term, what does it mean for Albania to seek a fourth term in a country with a hybrid democracy?
This is decided by the voter, but my idea is that the problem with leaders is that they don't know when to leave.
-Rama said I'll leave without going to the point of becoming exhausted...
The problem with Rama and this model, as Rama likes to do, like Erdogan, is that they don't know when they will leave. Who will define Rama, he is surrounded by people who only praise him. When they told Mussolini what you did to Italy, he said that everyone told me how beautiful it is, how smart you are, I didn't know what I was doing. Rama doesn't like the alternative stance at all. If you look at what happened to the SP, its main figures left. Everyone left with a project of Rama to remove the old jackets.
-Have you had an invitation from the Socialist Party to give your contribution?
I have no desire to be either a minister or a member of parliament. I have told my socialist colleagues that I can contribute as an advisor. I do it for the good of the country. I feel sorry for the young generation that runs so hard to grow up but they are unprepared. Young people may have the strength to run, but experience has its importance.
-Did Rama make a mistake with the selection of the governing teams?
The same with so many pears that they have eaten without his knowledge, because he chose them to choose. Neither the leadership nor the SP has any influence.
-Many names were unknown.
Not for Rama.
-Why these names?
He praised them, they don't debate. Dade and Meksei had their own profile. The PS was modernized by professors who studied in Berlin. They left their profession for the party. They were Bufi, Maqo, Angjeli. What hasn't happened in the PS today is that today if you send an SMS to a government leader or someone else, they won't reply. Maybe they're afraid of SPAK, but it's unethical.
-Is it arrogance on the part of the government?
There's definitely something going on. In any case, it's not Rama who's in charge. But they have a self-control system, they don't even say good morning.
