Minister of Justice Ulsi Manja, in a statement to journalists after the first round of consultation on the Criminal Code, stated that Albania will have a Criminal Code only when it receives the 'OK' from Brussels.
"Albania will have a Criminal Code when all phases of internal consultation are exhausted and it has received the seal in Brussels. It will be discussed, positions may not be reached on certain articles, but each article will be subject to consultation and public debate," said Manja.
The minister further emphasized that there will be 25 public consultation rounds for the new Criminal Code, which will serve to perfect it.
"I don't know of any practice in the world where drafts and important codes like the criminal code are written by certain interest groups, but they need to be consulted, which is why we were here today and we will hold 25 public consultation tables. The draft was drafted by this working group headed by the head of the magistrate's office and now it is up to the public consultation to enrich this draft," said the minister.
Asked about the decriminalization of defamation, Minister Manja said that this issue is being discussed and a decision will be made soon.
"Within October, we will have a special roundtable on some changes to the existing criminal code, there are 6 directives that we have committed to, which also includes the decriminalization of defamation. We are in discussions with Brussels regarding the decriminalization of defamation, we will have a decision on this very soon ," he concluded.
