Comparing the two campaigns/ Who was better, Rama or Berisha?

The leader of the SP demonstrated the chameleon-like ability to change endlessly, while the leader of the DP, monotonous in form, displayed a deeply political approach...

In the opening of the campaigns of the two major parties, Rama and Berisha have defeated each other in the field where they know how to compete better and feel more confident: the first in the ability to put on a show and the second in that of doing politics.

A comparison of the two rallies, the one that the Democrats held on Friday afternoon in Mother Teresa Square and the one that the Socialist Party held on Saturday morning in Skanderbeg Square, more or less revealed the characteristics that we know best about the leaders.

Edi Rama won the battle of form. Since leading the elections in 2009 at the helm of the Socialist Party, he has shown a true chameleon-like ability to change. If in 2009 the motto was “beyond left and right”, in 2013 it shifted much to the left, emphasizing the reduction of inequalities, fair progressive taxation, free healthcare, etc. After serving a term in power, in 2017 he came up with the thesis “the helm only for me, because the parties of the pan get in my way”, while in 2021 he converted into a clown who turned the campaign into a joke and entertainment, without presenting a single line of the program.

This time too, because he has been in government for 12 years, a scoundrel with broken promises, he has decided not to deal with the present, but with the future: the country's membership in the EU and the European passport, both topics that are not contested in this mandate.

Despite being manipulative and essentially false, Rama should be given credit for knowing how to reinvent himself in campaigns. This was also the case with Saturday's rally, which was more like the opening of the Gjirokastra festival than a political manifestation. But one thing is clear, for better or worse, such a campaign opening has never been seen before. You can be bored with Rama, but he knows how not to get bored. And in this aspect, that of form, he won the battle.

The Democratic Party's opening rally, held on Friday, was an unimaginative repetition of what we have already seen. If you rewind the film, in the early 2000s, the Democrats have done the same campaign openings. They also look exactly like the ones Basha organized before Berisha. So from a form point of view, no change. The only innovation was the campaign strategist, the American Trumpist La Civita, but he did not speak for more than two minutes.

So it's all a "deja vue" without imagination, where a young man, a farmer, a teacher speak, cursing the government and then leaving the floor to Berisha.

But if he lost the battle of form, the leader of the Democratic Party won the political battle. His speech was deeply political, that of a rival of an autocratic power. If Rama had neither a balance sheet nor promises for the next mandate except for the passport fable, Berisha made an X-ray of a failed government. He made an exposé of the resistance on how the opposition had escaped the regime's plan of annihilation. Rama "Did everything to erase from the history of this nation the major achievements in the field of freedom. Did everything to erase from the archives of this nation, the contribution of each of you to national dignity and national freedom. Did everything so that you had neither a name nor a flag.

"But here we are today, with our flag more proud than ever with you," he addressed the crowd. He also promised to establish a living wage of "200 euros for every pensioner, for every student, for every unemployed person, for everyone on economic assistance," promising a doubling of salaries and pensions and drastic tax cuts.

Of course, this economic program must be put through a scanner to see if it is feasible or not. And this should be the real debate of a campaign. Therefore, Berisha's approach was deeply political, a proper speech for an opposition leader. This is precisely why it can be said that if Rama defeated his rival in form, on the first day of the campaign he essentially lost the battle. / © Lapsi.al
