The murky LNG deal, pushed by the US ambassador in Athens and signed without transparency by the Rama government, raises serious doubts about the price, the real beneficiaries and the possible clash with Albania's European energy interests...
A completely opaque agreement between a private consortium and the Albanian state to bring liquefied gas from the US to the port of Vlora has been signed with great fanfare at the Prime Minister's Office. A 20-year agreement, which will undoubtedly go quickly to Parliament for ratification, in order to take full effect.
In a ceremony that is completely unclear from a political and institutional point of view, the US ambassador to Greece came to Edi Rama's office to postpone the signing. Which the Albanian prime minister did, while as always, it seems as if others are signing for him.
The whole deal affair, pushed by the US ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, a figure close to the Trump family, has many dilemmas, many shadows and little light.
From a political perspective, the question arises: why can the American ambassador in Athens negotiate an agreement in Tirana, when in her speeches she venerates Greece? A normal pact by the American government is usually pushed by the US embassy in Albania, as it covers this territory and directly faces the reaction of society, politics and public opinion in our country.
The Ambassador in Athens will likely never return to Tirana, except on business. She is accountable to the President, Congress, and the State Department for her work in Greece.
But this is only one side of the problem. The other part is the economic benefit, about which nothing is said. What is the price at which the Albanian state will buy liquefied gas from the Greek-American company for 20 years? Is it higher than the market price? And, secondly, what is the difference with the Trans Adriatic Pipeline gas that the joint Euro-Azerbaijani company SOCAR brings to Albania, which has also opened a terminal to supply the country?
Is Albania clashing with EU countries with this new energy warehouse outside the European system, openly competing with TAP, where our country is a part and beneficiary? This is also evidenced by the fact that, although a Greek company with problematic precedents in Albania is at stake, such as the one that built the Elbasan tunnel, the Greek government has not given its guarantee.
Another important element is the complete lack of discussion and transparency about the agreement, its details and consequences, both the benefits and the problems.
Edi Rama has negotiated this agreement as if it were a private matter, without discussing or making the draft public in the government, in the Parliament, or to public opinion.
It is true that the agreement will be approved, or rather ratified, in the Assembly, because otherwise this ceremony would not be organized. But the ratification is expected to take place quickly, after a fait accompli that has already occurred.
The only battle that could have political value is for the opposition, the media and society to turn the opposition to this agreement into a cause. An agreement that clearly seems to be unfavorable. But more importantly, Edi Rama has treated Albania as private property and has ignored, and even defied, the European Union.
If this does not happen and the agreement is ratified, for 20 years Albania will pay for LNG gas at an unknown price.
But the biggest question remains: who are the real shareholders of this agreement? Because experience with cases like Bankers or the customs scanner has shown that the money often ends up in the pockets of those who sign the agreements.

Epo ky “fylli” nuk kupton, tani qe erdhi dhe i trrokiti ne dere zonja per nje nder, ti thoshte qe ti zbllokonte greku lejet e qendrrimit (kartat) qe ka bllokuar veç per shqiptaret qe 3-4 vjet me pare, e te bente diçka simbolike per diasporen shqiptare ne greqi! Sikur ka keshilltare jevgjit ky re, qe mendojn veç per sot mer zot!
