From the Archbishop of Bologna to the Throne of Saint Peter? Profile of the Cardinal who could lead the Church into a new era of humility and hope

On May 8, 2025, the white smoke that rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney signaled the election of a new Pope. As the world eagerly awaits the symbolic "Habemus Papam" moment, one name is at the center of speculation: Cardinal Matteo Zuppi.

Who is Matteo Zuppi?

Born in Rome in 1955, Matteo Zuppi is the current Archbishop of Bologna and a member of the Community of Sant'Egidio, known for his mission in promoting peace, social assistance and inter-religious dialogue. His appointment as cardinal in 2019 by Pope Francis elevated him to the top of the church hierarchy, transforming him into a central figure in church reforms.

The reason why Zuppi is seen as the favorite

Zuppi represents the continuation of Pope Francis' line: an open, humble Church at the service of the poor and the excluded. He is a critical voice against exclusivism, nationalism and ecclesiastical bureaucracy. With deep theological training and concrete experience in the field, Zuppi embodies the profile of the "Pope at the service of the world".

From peace in Africa to dialogue in Europe

Among his most well-known contributions is his role as a peace negotiator in Mozambique, where he helped end a civil war. Zuppi has also been engaged in interfaith dialogue, promoting coexistence between religions at a time of high cultural and geopolitical tensions.

A Pope for the 21st century?

As a Cardinal, he has promoted new approaches to the LGBTQ+ community, has called for greater transparency and inclusion in the Church, and has emphasized the role of women in church structures. His balanced figure between tradition and progress makes him acceptable to all sides of the Church.

Why should Albanians care?

A Pope like Zuppi would mean more attention to the Balkans, immigration, and interfaith cooperation – topics that directly affect Albanian reality. Being a figure who understands the peripheries and suffering, he could be a true friend to the causes we share./ Pamphlet
