The Socialist Party plans to pass the draft for Albania's accession to the Peace Board through an accelerated procedure...
The majority has been set in motion to urgently pass the decision to admit Albania to the Peace Board.
Trump's invitation was like a 'jackpot' for Edi Rama, who had not had any contact with the American president's administration for a year. Although many countries view this invitation with reservations, Rama is satisfied with just being at a table with Trump. For this reason, the head of government announced today that he will accept to be part of the Board, while the matter will be passed for approval in the Assembly.
For this reason, the Socialists have immediately set in motion the preparation of the act, which will be passed through an accelerated procedure. Initially, the draft will be approved by the government and then it will be passed for approval by the Assembly. For this reason, the head of the SP group, Taulant Balla, has sent a message to the deputies that everyone should be present at the session that will be held for this occasion.
" Greetings colleagues! Albania's accession to the Peace Board, after approval by the Government, will also require ratification/voting in the Assembly. Therefore, this process will be carried out with an accelerated procedure, in accordance with the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly, as soon as it comes from the Council of Ministers. Perhaps we will need a session in the coming days. Please, take measures in advance to ensure attendance", reads the message of the Front addressed to the socialist deputies .
But what exactly is the "Peace Board" and why are some countries viewing it with great skepticism?
According to documents distributed by the Trump administration, the Peace Board is conceived as an international structure that will mediate, monitor, and in some cases intervene in armed conflicts or security crises around the world, initially with a focus on the Middle East, but later with an expanded mandate.
Unlike traditional UN missions, this Board is not subordinate to the UN Security Council, does not have proportional representation, and is not subject to any existing international law mechanism. It will be led by a secretariat chosen by the US and its closest allies, while its composition and decision-making are not yet clear.
This is why many countries, including Greece, France, Germany, Switzerland and some Nordic countries, have expressed open reservations, seeing this initiative as a parallel structure to the United Nations, undermining multilateralism and international rules built after World War II.
The main concern is that the creation of such a forum, politically led by an individual like Donald Trump, could become a tool for great powers to legitimize unilateral interventions in the name of "peace", without international consensus.
Despite this, the majority in Albania is moving forward with an accelerated procedure to ratify accession to this structure, giving Rama another symbolic position at international tables, although the political and diplomatic cost for the country in the long term remains unclear. /Pamphlet
