Today, the hearing of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, has been scheduled at the Special Anticorruption Court in Tirana.
The trial of the case was postponed last Thursday, October 12, when Beler's lawyers, present at the meeting, raised the issue of the exclusion of the court of Etleva Deda, which has decided on the other demands of the defendants regarding their detention as and Beler's right to be sworn in as an elected mayor.
Despite the opposition of the district prosecutor, the court postponed the trial for today.
Meanwhile, yesterday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made it clear to the Albanian media that he wants the oath of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri.
While participating in the proceedings of the Berlin Summit, Mitsotaksi said that "Fredi Beleri has the right to swear even though he is in custody and I will make this very clear."
He added that he will discuss this issue with Prime Minister Rama and expects to resolve it amicably.
"Yes, I will discuss with Prime Minister Rama the case of Fredi Beleri. Our position on this matter has been very clear. I do not intend to interfere in Albanian justice issues, but Fredi Beleri has the right to swear even though he is in custody and I will make this very clear. And I very much hope that we can resolve this issue amicably," Mitsotakis said.
Fredi Beleri was arrested in the premises of a bar in Himare, just 2 days before the local elections on May 14, after he was caught red-handed with his colleague Pandeli Kokaveshi buying votes.
Beleri could not take office, as the judicial authorities did not give him permission to take the oath. The Greek government is also involved in his issues, which calls his arrest illegal and political.
