The United States Chargé d'Affaires in Tirana, Nancy VanHorn, arrived this Monday, February 17, at the Albanian Parliament, where she was welcomed in a meeting by the Speaker of the Parliament, Niko Peleshi.
According to sources, the American diplomat is expected to hold another meeting with the head of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, Taulant Balla, tomorrow.
VanHorn's meetings take place one day after the meeting of the SP Parliamentary Group, where a legal amendment to Article 242 of the Criminal Procedure Code was proposed.
The Socialists, led by Prime Minister Rama, have announced that they intend to change this article, providing for the removal of the courts' right to take suspension measures from office against the Prime Minister, ministers, the President of the Republic, the People's Advocate and the head of the Supreme State Audit Office.
The proposed legal changes come after the Constitutional Court rejected Rama's claims that the suspension of Belinda Balluku from the Special Court was a violation of the constitution, due to lack of quorum.
However, during the parliamentary group meeting, Rama said that the proposal had nothing to do with the specific case.
