Former Minister of Finance, Arben Malaj, has commented on rumors about a possible lifting of the "non grata" status for Sali Berisha, stating that the real problem of the opposition is not related to this issue, but to the political legacy that, according to him, the historic leader of the Democratic Party has left.
In a live broadcast on Andrea Dangli's "Off the Record" show on A2CNN, Malaj stated that the Democratic Party once represented hope for change and European integration, but then lost this political mission.
" The main problem of the opposition is not whether or not its leader is 'non grata'. The problem is that that party, which inspired the great change that happened throughout the East and that would also happen in Albania, was the hope and dream that Albania would become like the rest of Europe. After 1994, when the Constitution failed, the entire state apparatus of President Berisha was put in a hostile position with the rest of the country, which was the opposition. And what the leader of the Democratic Party has left as a political legacy is a total failure in all aspects ," Malaj said.
He also recalled a piece of political advice that, according to him, he received from the former Speaker of the Parliament, Servet Pëllumbi, regarding the way Berisha exercised power.
" I have had the good fortune to learn from political leaders of the Socialist Party and one of the valuable lessons I have learned from Professor Servet Pëllumbi was the advice he gave to President Berisha at the time. He said: 'Be careful, because in politics the spring effect works. The more you press a spring, the more it jumps up'. This was one of the biggest problems of that political period ," declared the former Minister of Finance.
Malaj also commented on Berisha's relationship with the international factor, emphasizing that even a possible removal of the "non-women" clause would not bring about major political change.
" There is no diplomatic manual, but there is a principle of values. First, love your country; second, serve your country with integrity; third, be guided by cooperation, not by quarrels. In order to achieve the mission for which you swear: to accelerate integration, but above all to increase the quality of integration. Even if the 'non grata' of Sali Berisha is removed, it will not bring any major change, because the disappointment is with the internationals ," said Malaj.
