From a port with zero investment, to 400 million euros from the state budget,

Prime Minister Edi Rama has given details regarding the construction of the new port in Porto Romano, which will receive 400 million euros from the state budget.

At a time when the government abandoned the initial idea to find foreign financing for its construction, Rama said that Albanians would have greater benefits if the state owns the port.

Invited to the show "Opinion", the head of the government emphasized that the old port should have been removed long ago as it is a source of pollution in Durrës and "ugliness".

" The port will be profitable for Albanians. The commercial port of Durrës has not been moved from where it was simply to pave the way to turn it into one of the most beautiful marinas in the Mediterranean. Not for that, but because it is a shame in the middle of Europe. That port is a source of pollution, rust, ugliness. Where you unload and load all kinds of things right in the heart of the city. That port should have been removed from that place an hour ago. The new commercial port of Porto Romano is an investment of extraordinary strategic importance for Albania. It will have military components such as a NATO base, the first base built for this purpose in Europe at this time.

To the financing of the port, which is a port connected to two other dry ports, one in Përbishti and one in North Macedonia. With other countries we will create a much faster access, as today everything passes through the port of Thessaloniki. We in Albania had to not let the cities become barracks. This is a matter of vision. We have the financial possibilities. We had the option to put it out to tender to say who will come to finance it, but in that case the state would no longer be the owner. And to finance the commercial port, so that we are the owners, that is, the state. You must be clear that when we finance these projects, we do not do it for our pocket. So, it is better for the Albanian state to be the owner and give it to an international operator and receive income ", said Rama.
