The Supreme Court has refused to release former President Ilir Meta from prison. The latter appealed the decision of the Court of Appeal, which refused to change the security measure. But the Supreme Court has also closed the door on the former President.
The rapporteur of the appeal was Albana Boksi, while the members are Sokol Binaj and Medi Bici.
Ilir Meta was arrested on October 21, 2024. Meta and MP Monika Kryemadhi are suspected of having, in collaboration with other state officials, exploited their state and political positions.
According to the charges, they are suspected of favoring private companies and other activities with lobbying in the US and buying and selling homes in exchange for receiving significant sums of money, which they tried to hide.
Meta is accused of the criminal offenses of "passive corruption", "money laundering" and "hiding assets". SPAK closed the investigation on July 28, and sent the file for trial at the end of August.
