The Democratic Party has decided to participate in the November 9 by-elections, but not with its official candidates.
In an unusual move, the DP has submitted its application for registration with the CEC as an electoral entity, while not submitting any candidate names for the municipalities where the process will take place. This means that the DP's name will not appear on the ballots.
However, this does not mean that the DP will stay out of the race. On the contrary, the party has chosen to support independent candidates in five municipalities: Mat, Vlorë, Cërrik, Berat and Tepelena. This strategy is seen as a way to maintain local influence, without taking on potential losses that would damage its national image.
Tirana will not be included in these elections, as the Constitutional Court has overturned the decree dismissing the current mayor, following an institutional clash that ended with the cancellation of the race for the capital. This rules out a direct confrontation in one of the most important political bastions.
