Lawyer Kreshnik Spahiu has stated that there is no legal or political basis for calling early elections in Tirana. In a statement to the media, he stressed that the current mayor Erion Veliaj has not resigned, and therefore new local elections cannot be called, as long as a final court decision is missing.
"There will be no early elections, because they only happen in cases of parliamentary crises. The Socialist Party has won the majority of votes and these are simply Berisha's alibi," Spahiu declared. He accused former Prime Minister Sali Berisha of using the crisis narrative to postpone the political confrontation and gain time, although - according to him - the result was expected and predicted by the polls.
" There will be no early elections, because they happen when there is a parliamentary crisis. The Socialist Party has received a majority of votes, and these are Berisha's alibi, he says a technical government, there are no elections with Rama and to postpone it for another 4 years. He considers it a victory because everyone knew that would be the result and Berisha expected that result. Even in the polls, Berisha came out lower.
"I don't believe he was aiming for power. Rama has received 80 MPs and I will give Berisha permission to vote and there will be a draw and the game continues. There will be no early elections in Tirana either. The elections for Tirana will be in the summer of 2027. Because the law provides that if the court does not issue a final decision on Veliaj's resignation, then early elections cannot be announced in Tirana ," he said on "Report TV".
