From the podium to the Molotov cocktails and the intervention of special forces, the rally was accompanied by incidents, the use of force and ended with clashes towards the Parliament.
The Democratic Party held its seventh national protest today in front of the Prime Minister's Office, which began with speeches from opposition leaders and representatives, but was then accompanied by tensions and strong clashes with the police.
The rally opened with speeches from figures from the Democratic Party, while its leader, Sali Berisha, delivered the keynote address to supporters gathered on the boulevard. In his speech, Berisha accused the government of election manipulation and vote control, drawing comparisons with the political situation in other European countries.
After the speeches ended, the situation became tense when a group of protesters threw fireworks and Molotov cocktails towards the Prime Minister's Office building. Immediately afterwards, the police intervened quickly and in a coordinated manner, catching the protesters by surprise and neutralizing the people throwing the pyrotechnic devices.
The intervention of the security forces was accompanied by physical clashes on the ground. According to reports and images from the scene, the police used rubber batons, tear gas, pressurized water and pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
As a result of the intervention, several opposition representatives were injured. Aulon Kalaja, Luçiano Boçi and Klevis Balliu ended up in hospital for medical attention, while the Secretary General of the DP, Flamur Noka, was seen lying in the street receiving first aid, after problems caused by the pepper spray.
The clashes continued, as some of the protesters moved towards the Parliament area. New tensions were noted near the Namazgja Mosque, where opposition MPs such as Flamur Noka and Bledjon Nallbati clashed with officers in an attempt to break the police cordon.
Law enforcement used water cannons to stop the advance of the crowd and prevent protesters from approaching the Parliament building, keeping the security perimeter blocked.
The rally started at around 19:40 and ended after about two hours. It was the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, who declared the end of the rally by delivering the closing speech from the Democratic Party headquarters. / Pamphlet
