The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, participated this evening in the first iftar of the holy month of Ramadan, organized in Tirana by the Albanian Muslim Community.
In his welcoming speech, the Head of State focused on the spiritual and moral meaning of Ramadan, describing it as a period of reflection and strengthening the connection with God, family, and society.
President Begaj emphasized that Ramadan is not just a period of deprivation from food and fluids, but "a high school of character," which encourages patience, self-restraint, and deep reflection.
Quoting the Quran, he recalled the verse: “O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you… that you may become righteous” (Al-Baqarah, 2:183), emphasizing that the essence of fasting lies in moral elevation and piety.
Along the same lines, the President also brought the message of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), according to which fasting without honesty and justice remains a ritual without content.
President Begaj's speech
With the start of the first iftar, a blessed month knocks on our hearts, a prosperous month that marks a new spiritual journey for every Muslim believer.
Ramadan is not simply a period of deprivation of food and fluids. It is, above all, a high school of character, a daily exercise of patience, self-restraint and deep reflection, it is the time when man returns to the essence, to what is important, strengthening the connection with the Creator, love for family and responsibility towards society.
The Holy Book, the Quran, teaches us:
“O you who have believed, fasting is prescribed for you… that you may become righteous” (Al-Baqarah, 2:183).
This verse places fasting in its true dimension: as a means of elevating morals.
At a time when our world and society are often challenged by tensions, polarization, and rapid haste, Ramadan comes as a precious invitation to lower our voices, listen to our conscience, and find inner peace.
As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) instructs us, “Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need for him to give up food and drink.”
This message is more relevant today than ever. Fasting without honesty, without justice, and without self-restraint in word and deed would remain simply a ritual, a form, but without content.
Our Albania needs this content, more human solidarity, more integrity, and more sincere care for others.
Iftar is the great moment of unity.
Around the table, as we have gathered tonight, differences are erased and bonds between family, neighbors, and friends are strengthened. This table reminds us that no Albanian should feel alone, especially those facing economic hardship, social insecurity, or health challenges.
The personal sacrifice of the fasting person takes on full meaning only when it is transformed into an outstretched hand for those who have less.
Our country is blessed with the precious value of religious brotherhood, a heritage that we must jealously protect.
In this holy month, let us work to ensure that this harmony translates into more responsibility in public life and more honesty in our daily relationships.
I wish you from the bottom of my heart an accepted month of Ramadan, with health and prosperity for every believer and every Albanian family!
Easy and accepted fasting!
