When SPAK prosecutors knocked on the doors of the City Hall, Erion Veliaj knows that now more than ever, Edi Rama holds the key to his political destiny. The Prime Minister can give the blessing for the investigations to go further, according to the model of Arben Ahmetaj, when he said that if I were the prosecutor, it could suffer even worse, or he could stop their continuation.
Veliaj knows that this will not depend much on the documents he signed, on the connections he had with the Tirana incinerator, or on the letters he sent to Zoto e Mërtiri, but on the political loyalty he will show to Edi Rama.
So far he has received both signals. In the file against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmetaj, Erion's name was mentioned a total of 10 times, and the person already wanted was also accused of not having stopped Veliaj from approving the procedures of the Tirana arsonist. This was in July. A few months later, when the arrests broke out in December, although Veliaj's right-hand man, Taulant Tushe, and another employee of the Municipality, Namik Simixhiu, ended up in prison, his name did not appear anywhere (see the link below).
The mayor will be forced to walk this thin wire and he has decided to do this by guaranteeing the big boss that he remains an unwavering loyalist.
To demonstrate this, he gathered the structures of the Tirana SP at the weekend to mobilize them for the "fourth victory of Edi Rama". If you look carefully at the passages that the media commanded by Veliaj chose from this activity, the situation becomes even clearer. There, not only was the message given that Veliaj was committing ahead of time for a new governing mandate for Rama, a year and a half before the next electoral race, but that his loyalty was unwavering.
"We aim for a fourth term for Prime Minister Edi Rama and our political force, which is the largest, most patriotic and progressive family in the country", the political chief of Tirana was heard to say, with the structures of the SP.
But he went even further. Everyone knows that this is Veliaj's last term in the Municipality, as the law prevents him from another candidacy. Often this has raised the question of what he will do next, and how his political career will continue. Will he aim higher by plotting to kill his father, or will he continue to act like his own devoted soldier? Erioni has decided to appease Rama in public by playing the second role.
"Who would have thought that after three terms in the municipality I would slow down, I promise you publicly that this will be the campaign where I will commit even more, I will work even harder, not only for Edi Rama and the Socialist Party, but due to the fact that this political force and its president have transformed Albania in an unimaginable way", Veliaj guaranteed.
The mayor, a close friend of Alex Soros and with strong connections in Washington, has often been seen as an alternative to replace the scandal-weary and increasingly personalizing Rama. If there was an international lobbying project for change, in the conditions where the opposition is crushed, the name that was mentioned was that of Veliaj.
But Rama was the first to understand this. Aware that he is not a majority in the country, convinced that one day someone may ask him behind the scenes to leave, he has followed the policy of the barren land behind him. On the one hand, weakening and dividing the opposition and on the other hand, eliminating any possibility for a successor. His motto is: in this country I am the only factor.
Even Veliaj, who one could consider as an alternative, is now a politician with a hot file in SPAK. The mayor understood this better than anyone, to whom it seems that the only way left is Rama's guarantee that he is working without tricks to extend his unlimited power./ Lapsi.al
