North Macedonia delivers a verbal demarche to Tirana regarding the reactions of Ambassador Denion Meidani; the Albanian side raises concerns about the detention of students from Tirana
Diplomatic relations between Albania and North Macedonia have entered a moment of tension, after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Skopje summoned Albanian Ambassador Denion Meidani for clarification regarding his public statements in support of Albanian students in North Macedonia.
Sources from the North Macedonian Foreign Ministry inform Euronews Albania that an official meeting was held at the ministry today, where a verbal demarche was delivered to the Albanian side for what Skopje considers "inappropriate diplomatic communication".
Ambassador Meidani himself did not participate in the meeting, but the Albanian deputy ambassador.
" A verbal demarche has been delivered regarding the ambassador's inappropriate public statements during the recent period, which move close to the border between ordinary and legitimate diplomatic communication and possible interference in the internal affairs of the country of accreditation ," sources from the Macedonian Foreign Ministry are quoted as saying.
Skopje's reaction comes after public statements by the Albanian ambassador in support of Albanian students protesting for the right to conduct the jurisprudence exam in the Albanian language.
A day earlier, Denion Meidani reacted publicly after the stopping and checking of a bus with Albanian students from Tirana traveling to Skopje to participate in the student protest.
" When students are stopped, delayed, and intimidated while traveling to peacefully express solidarity for a linguistic right, the issue ceases to be merely procedural. It affects the very democratic understanding and European spirit that we aim to build as a region ," Meidani declared.
The Albanian ambassador emphasized that students are not seeking privileges, but respect for fundamental rights and the use of their native language.
" These young people are not asking for privileges. They are asking for dignity, equality and respect for fundamental rights. A demand for dignity should never be perceived as a threat ," he said.
Meanwhile, during the diplomatic meeting, the Albanian side raised concerns about the treatment of around 40 Albanian students traveling from Tirana to Skopje.
