Prime Minister Edi Rama has reacted to the opposition's claims about the blocking of Albania's negotiations with the European Union, describing them as untrue and without any real basis.
During his speech at the meeting, which was also attended by EU Ambassador Silvio Gonzato, Rama explained that the negotiation process takes place between Albania and the European Commission, while member states are involved in another phase of discussions.
Rama stressed that the European Commission considers Albania's duties fulfilled at this stage of the process and added that claims of blocking negotiations are just political rhetoric.
"Saying that they were blocked is like selling air," declared Rama, mocking the opposition for the way it is presenting the integration process.
"Today in Brussels, Albania is not negotiating with the EU, but the European Commission is discussing with the member states. Albania negotiates with the commission, not with the states. Phase after phase, when the commission considers the tasks of a phase completed, it goes to the states to present its report. The European Commission considers Albania's tasks in this phase and the so-called intermediate milestones to be completed. Saying that they were blocked is like selling air. This process has a special need for you, the people who are between this process and public opinion, to understand how it works. Guarantees are the same as saying, it's the same as saying you are going to war and what guarantee do you have to win the war. War is won by trying, there is no written guarantee.
We have it written. It is not something imagined, but it is written, it is a very ambitious calendar to close the negotiations. For us, it is very important what the EU says, because it looks at the process in a technical and objective way. For us, the task is over and we continue with the next phase," said Rama.
